I have to temporarily stop work to buy the KVASER Leaf light ($350). I discovered that I really need a CAN bus analyzer to go faster. Getting the messages right is necessary.

I am at the point where I need to keep track of the bus myself and create message traffic. About a week of so I should be able to finish the sample Fuel Level sender (no address claim) and reader.

Just curious - do you mean the timestamping or the bus load?

The standard signal rate for NMEA2K is 250kbits and the Kvaser Leaf Light should handle full bus load at 250kbits. The accuracy of the time-stamping is 100us.

Thanks for stopping by. I want do both as a reference system, so the project can be black box tested against a known system.

I ordered an old Tek 11801C (a 50 GHz) that will be connected to some handcoded octave m. code over the GPIB for part of the work on the jitter.

I would like to modify my answer.. :) The traffic on a NMEA 2000 bus can come in burst due to the standard message update rates and the fast packet protocol. For this reason, I prefer to recommend our devices that support USB 2.0 and can handle around 10000 messages per second or better. Sorry for this!

I am guessing that means going 480 Mb HS 2.0 USB over 12 MB Full Speed 2.0 USB .... I haven't ordered yet. The LM3S8962 project board has a FTDICHIP 12 MB USB, though I am not using it for the first project. --- I can always push to IPV6 RT ethernet/ip with a GPS module sync to the IEEE 1588. The Luminary Micro is the best $89 I've spent, but the number of options on the eval board, slows down the decision process. What I want to do vs what I can do makes it hard to keep the focus.

OK, so I should seek a Leaf light semi pro version with the built in galvanic (and opto) isolation. Is that something that Maretron and Actisense buyers should look for in a NMEA specific CAN/USB interface?

BTW do you all use octave or matlab in developing? I hope to post some scripts here. One post (in the works) is a javascript browser GUI interface that works in Matlab, Octave and Freemat on windows.

Thanks ....
