This is a one second headache preventer. When you replace your oil filter, make certain the old gasket doesn't remain in place.

I changed oil & filter last weekend and on running the engine to get the new oil circulated thru the system including the filter, discovered to my horror that my new oil was being lost into the bilge. I went home in disgust. Today, I found the cause - the old gasket had stayed attached to the base of the filter housing and oil squirted out where it joined the new filter gasket. I lost about three messy quarts. That mistake won't happen again.

Thanks for the tip - I got lucky when I did mine recently, but I'll remember to check in the future. But just in case you thought you were all alone in the "Boneheaded mistakes" department:

I got over to the boat yesterday for another fun day in the engine room (checking out the spinning transmission) and noticed to my horror that the cushions on the settee were a soaking wet mess. My first reaction was to look up - I guess I was thinking that the roof shingles had failed - then I noticed that I had left both starboard sliding windows open when I left the boat last weekend!

I dragged both cushions home and gave them a good bath in laundry detergent and bleach. Does anyone have any idea how heavy that foam gets when fully saturated?! I left both to drain in the tub after rinsing, am laying them out flat this morning to continue what will surely be a very slow drying process.

I guess the good news is that I soaked up enough rain water over the last week to keep the Chesapeake from overflowing...

Joel,
I know exactly what you are talking about! I didn't notice the old gasket didn't come off with filter on my goldwing. Pumps a lot of oil quickly! I can only imagine the mess in the bilge!
