I have a couple of pieces of tight fitting foam pushed in hatch opening. Note I never use my hatch so it is no problem. But in Spring when we had heat on when we were sleeping over it drove us nuts with the driping. We put some towels on top on sliding screen to get us through the weekend. Towels were pretty wet from 1 night.

The foam is not providing a tight seal and allowing moisture to get to the cold parts of the hatch and frame. Air may be getting by the insulation around the knobs for closing hatch. The knobs would also be cold since they are metal and in contact with the cold hatch. The rigid insulation panel with the sealing foam on the edges prevents air penetration. The insulation panel fits neatly above the screen and below the knobs (barely).
