We are going to replace our old Guest 15A charger this spring.

I'm looking for any input/experiences dealing with battery chargers.

Anyone have any bad luck with a particular brand or model?

Is there a particular type that has worked well for you?

I'm currently looking at the ProMariner Pro Sport Gen2 (42020). So far it seems pretty good. Only a few ProMariner reviews out there. All seem good except for 1 guy who uses them on his pontoon and says the units crap out after a couple years but they are mounted outside in the weather.

Here is the website for the model I'm looking at.
http://www.promariner.co...re.php?ProductNum=42020

Thanks,
Karl

I have not used Pro Mariner chargers for a while. They used to come factory installed on many brand boats. I found that they did not shut down properly and created more battery problems because they "boiled" the batteries dry too quickly.
I have had very good experiences with Charging Systems International products branded Dual Pro. Found them to be very reliable. If you have a problem (only once ) called them up they went out of their way to make it right.
For Jeff they even have great deals on factory reconditioned with warranty.
Their web site is www.dualpro.com
Hope this is helpful

Thanks, Dave. I may have to spring for a new one as well. I've had to add water to all of my 5 batteries several times a year, and I don't think it's because of the alternators. This year I'm going to shut the battery chargers off when we leave the boat and see what happens.

Are you topping off the batterys with tap water? The alkalinity in city tap water neutrailzes the acid and your battery puts out a lower voltage. Your charger senses the lower voltage and overcharges your batterys causing them to cook off more water. Only add distilled water to your batterys and cooling system antifreeze.

The new "three-stage" chargers can add a lot of battery life, especially for flooded batteries. The charger needs to sense when the battery won't take any more charge, and switch into "float" mode. Otherwise, the batteries just manufacture hydrogen while using up their water.

Thanks for all the input, guys.

Dave, I printed the DualPro literature today. Will give it a good read.
Found a review for DualPro from 5 different people. Overall the product received 4.8 out of 5. Sounds good!

On my start batteries, I have something like what SDog suggests: a solar panel that delivers a trickle charge to the two batteries each through diodes and a small (1/2 ohm) resistor, to split the current. It does not depend on shore power. The panels are a little pricey, but once installed this setup works well without maintenance of any sort.

Not sure how well it would work here in DC. Haven't seen more than a couple hours of sun in weeks now......

Received my Dual Pro PS2 today. What a beast! The shipping was listed at 19lbs and I believe it.
Got it hooked up in the garage, charging the boat batts as I type.
Seems like quality construction and made in the USA!
http://www.dualpro.com/

Got it from http://www.chargingchargers.com/ They had the cheapest price I could find. The prices did go up this past month but this place still lists it cheaper. The unit is shipped from the factory in TN.

Thanks to Dave Morris for the recommendation.
