I sell Dell's, and I snagged one of these immediately. It's not much more than the price of a good NetBook, yet the possibilities are endless, with this bullet-proof IBM, with a touchscreen (tablet pc) & a full-size keyboard. With the first (2) upgrades I recommend below, the cost was $701 + tax, free shipping. I recommend: 1. Add the Bluetooth option for $29. If you don't know why, add it anyway. You'll figure it out later. 2. Upgrade the 160gb hard drive from 5400 to 7200 RPM. It will increase the performance. Cost $35. 3. Don't bother upgrading the memory from 1gb. Buy it from Crucial or NewEgg, and you can go to 4gb for about $50. 4. These are about 3 lbs. They DO NOT have built-in DVD-rom's - You should be able to pick up the "Media Base" for about $30-50 on eBay (snaps on to the bottom). Probably.
Most GPS units don't have that kind of resolution, so I don't see why not. You'd have to get a base for it (I found a base, extra charger, and DVD-RW for $85 on ebay, or try a bluetooth gps antenna - should work fine, as well. I don't recommend this being your ONLY GPS, though.
Nice thing is, you can go to Tablet mode and move the screen around with your finger.

That swivel makes me nervous. I could see myself snapping that off. Be nice for office/home but, for use on boat I'd get a Toughbook. Brand new they are $$$ but you can find used on Ebay.

Actually, they are supposed to be pretty rugged. If I use it on the boat (underway), it will be in Tablet Mode, with the screen locked down (it has a touch screen). I believe you can also bring up a "virtual keyboard" on a tablet PC, if I'm not mistaken. Sales people and tech-support people use these things all the time - they are meant to take some abuse.
The battery life on these things is crazy-long...
For the money, touch screen, and a 1.6 GHZ Core 2 Duo processor, not a bad deal. You can add bluetooth and the faster hard drive, and still only have $701 into it, plus tax.

Wouldn't you worry about anything using a mechanical hard drive. We can slap those waves pretty hard up north and, as you know, the chance of a crash is magnefied by the g-forces we can expirence while on the way. I like the touch screen though. Been looking for one of them on the cheap. Then putting together that with an old laptop with a bootable thumb drive. Almost the perfect setup to use with my Garmin Mapsource. Touch screen chart plotter on the cheap!

Most of the newer laptops, including this one, have SD Card slots (think camera card), that you should be able to boot from.
Flash memory, like SD Cards, has come down in price so far, that I just picked up (3) 8gb cards for $70 on craigslist. Brand new Sandisk Extreme III class 6 cards.
8 gb is more than enough to load XP and mapping software. In theory, you shouldn't need to use your hard drive for anything other than storage of music, files, etc. Or you can set up a dual-boot, where you would load from the hard drive, while at the dock only.
They also have 16gb cards out there, if not larger. I would recommend ghosting that setup, to your regular hard drive, in the event that your SD Card failed. That way, you'd just put in a blank card and re-image it.
You could also buy an SSD (solid state drive), and replace your regular hard drive with is, leaving your SD slot open.
Imagine a 12" touchscreen GPS that doesn't use a hard drive at all...

There are jelly sleeves for the hard drives to protect against shock. But as John stated solid state storage would be ideal.
