The Kvaser Leaf Light is USB to CAN interface aimed for budget applications and can e.g. be used for NMEA applications. In addition, the complete range of CAN interfaces from Kvaser support all Higher Layer Protocols, such as NMEA.

However, the traffic on a NMEA 2000 bus can come in burst due to the standard message update rates and the fast packet protocol. For this reason, I prefer to recommend our devices that support USB 2.0 and can handle around 10000 messages per second or better.

Kvaser products includes driver support, Software Development Kit (SDK) as well as CAN bus monitor - Kvaser CANKing. Visit www.kvaser.com to download the driver package and SDK, after that you can explore the sample programs and write your own computer applications for free using the virtual CAN hardware. Please note that the SDK does not include any specific NMEA API functions.

You also can buy the NMEA certification tool from www.nmea.org that Kvaser have made.

Carlsson, Thanks for stopping by. There has been a deep lack of real protocol information for the NMEA Marine electronics hobbyist, I am interested in the product line. BTW: Kvaser Leaf Light is $350... It supports the Famous CanKing product. Kvaser makes the compliance testing product available from NMEA.

Unlike OBDII integration information (partly based on the huge secondary market) which has a huge amount of information, NMEA protocols have been very slow is disseminating information.

Is KVASER planning to move to RT/Ethernet and IEEE 1588 as an adjunct to these CAN protocols?

Thank you for the follow-up. Kvaser is following the development of ethernet in the automation field and other industries. However, we have not released any products for ethernet yet. Ethernet has some advantages over CAN and vice versa. The best and most cost effective solution depends on the application.

Which information would you like to see on our web site? Perhaps we can extend the information on our web site to make it more complete.

More hobbyists are familiar with IP and ethernet over CAN, and as many might know web services. Support for a CAN listener (read only) gateway is easier for hobby developers that aren't into the control systems.
