Anyone out there have any methods on making guppys with connections that last. I tried making two last year that worked great then but not now.

I took two mg bars, drilled 4" holes in the top of each. Inserted 8 gauge wire into the hole (stripped of course) and beat the hell out of the bar to crimp the bar and grasp the wire. I then sealed the top with 5200. The crimp worked great but the 5200 came loose, I suspect due the the bar corroding vreaking the seal. Water then got in (I assume) and has corroded the conection.

Should I use an epoxy? What kind/brand?

Also, where in the hell can you get a decent pair of alligator clips that will last. They also corroded heavily.

Many thanks!!

I used braided stainless wire (sold in most hardware box stores as picture hanging wire).

I through-bolted the magnesium with a stainless 1/4" bolt and nut. I tied the wire around the bolt and tightened it up.

3 years and no signs of corrosion of the connection. As the magnesium dissolves over time, I can tighten the nut and bolt to take up the slack.

Thanks Peter - did you use any particular type of alligater clamp for connecting to the boat?
The ones that I have found stink! They corrode quickly....

I don't use an alligator clamp. I use a stainless band clamp on the stanchion.

I just wrapped a few turns of the stainless braided wire around the band clamp and loosely tightened it onto the stainless stanchion.
I rotate the clamp around the stanchion a few turns to wrap the wire for support.

Try your local welding supply. Ground clamps used in welding are tuff. I also made a set of jumper cables out of welding cable & clamps. Better than any jumper cables you buy at auto parts stores.

Dave and Peter
Thanks very much for the information.
Peter, when you say band clamp, are these like hose clamps or the kind that have several nuts that tighten the? Where did you get them?
Dave - the welding supply is a great suggestion...
Thanks guys, I am on the way with your help....

It's just a hose clamp.

Thanks....I was thinking that but did find some neat band "clamps" that are somewhat long and have two screws that look a lot better than a hose clamp. Just google band clamp and they will come up.
Thank you guys for the help and ideas.
