We have an Onan 6.5 MCCK genset on our 32' sedan.

It was real finicky when we bought the boat 7 years ago, but it has gotten better with use. Onan recommends running 1/2 hour weekly under load, which is a lot, but we run it a lot more (I believe) than the last owner. Also, about 4 years ago rebuilt the carb.

At any rate, I noticed last week that one of the shielded cables is looking pretty shabby, so I went on line looking for parts. Luckily, we have all of the original manuals, so I had part numbers. NO luck, cables no longer available.

Does anyone know of a supplier? The cable is preventive maintenance, but I'm worried about something going that kills the genset with parts not available.

Does anyone know what I can do to try to "reshield" the existing cables? They are not yet shorting, I'm just trying to prevent an issue in the future.

I was thinking maybe I'd brush on a coat of liquid electrical tape each time I go to the boat until I get a substantial build up.

Jim, Are you talking about the shielded spark plug wires? If so I wouldnt worry about them too much. The shielding isnt really needed. There are MANY out there that have done away with them completely. It takes a coil change and different spark plugs (MUCH CHEAPER PLUGS) with new regular style wires. I Use a Harley Motorcycle Coil on my one Onan. Let me know if you want more info about this. OH and the BEST UPGRADE I have done was converting to Electronic ignition and getting rid of the points box. Starts faster/easier and runs smoother. Let me know

My onan hasn't ran since my sea trial (2004) . I have a new "carby" that I will install when were in the water. Some think it can be the points. I might be interested in that conversion over from points.
Thanks Randy

Randy, The electronic ignition conversion isnt hard but does take a bit of fabrication work. I copied it from a guy at this site.

http://www.smokstak.com/...um/forumdisplay.php?f=6

There is a TON of info here for all types of generators but I have really only spent time in the ONAN section.

There are a few different ways to convert over shown on that site...one is to use all Onan parts, this is kind of expensive (about $200) and still not as accurate as some of the other ways since it still uses the original points push rod and eccentric and they have ALOT of slop in them. I will have to find the info for the way I did it when I get a chance, may take me a few days. When I do I will post the exact link. Mine uses the Pertronix Hall effect pick up and magnet from a SB chevy kit ($90 new or less on ebay) to fire a dual tower Harley Coil with 8mm wires and standard style plugs. You dont have to do the coil and all, you can just have it fire your existing coil but I had the genny all apart and had the Harley coil so I figured why not! It works GREAT.

Send me a PM with a phone # and I will give you a call asap too.

Ok Had a few mins and searched...what I have found so far is 2 of the three conversion projects that I studied before I did mine.

http://nissandiesel.dynd...ewtopic.php?p=4753#4753

http://www.gmcmhphotos.c...howphoto.php?photo=6786

These are essentially the same conversion as I did. I took all the info and tried to use the "BEST" of it in my opinion for mine.

By the way...It is BEST to have a RUNNING generator BEFORE you decide to do this conversion. That way you KNOW your not fighting multiple probs all at the same time.

Thanks for the feedback, as always. I like the idea of converting to electronic Ignition and that Smokstak site looks like a real keeper.
