I thought I heard a fan running yesterday while I was in the engine compartment cleaning up my oil filter leak mess. Double-checked and confirmed all master AC & DC switches were off. Upon investigation, I found that the humming, a soft smooth vibration was coming from the galvanic isolator. Not the rasping alarm sound. I checked the outlets with a polarity tester and confirmed correct polarity, no crosses.

What causes these things to hum? Is that their natural operation? It's the first time I encountered that (unless my ears are getting better).

Have never had a galvanic isolator but I would guess that since it is an isolator, it has an isolation transformer in it. All transformers have some "hum" to them when operating. The greater the load the greater the hum. Heck there are more than a couple of power line pole transformers that you can hear while walking by.

I don't believe that the galvanic isolator has a transformer in it. It is designed to block current below a certain voltage, and likely has a couple of zener diodes and some other stuff in it. I will look it up....

As for the hum, perhaps it is happy to be on a Marinette and is singing to itself. :-)

There is a pretty good writeup on galvanic isolators at http://www.yandina.com/galvanicIsolator.htm

Still no explanation for the hum. I can't think of one.

By the way, I have an actual isolation transformer. It must weigh 100 lbs, so I put it all the way forward to help counteract the weight of the diesels.

Had the same problem a few years ago. It went away when I disconnected the power line, but came right back when I reconnected it. Eventually--power turned off--the marina "repaired" itself. I assume the rain storm was responsible.
