Looking to install a washdown pump and have some ideas. I was planning to tie into the freshwater intake for the engine cooling. (I have twin V-6's with a closed cooling system). While
looking over the set up I leaned on a warm the exhaust manifold and a lightbulb wet on in my head. Could I tie into the outlet side of the cooling system between the heat exchanger and the exhaust manifold? That way I could have the option to have warm water for the washdown pump. Several questions need answered. Does the system drain when the engine is off? If so I would have to run the engine whenever I used the pump. Second if the engine is off, would a washdown pump pull water through the idle raw water pump? Any input would be helpful.

I'm surprised some of the more motorhead members haven't responded but I'll give you my take on it.

I don't think I would tie into the outlet side - might work but you'd have a pump pulling on a pump. If you tried it, I think it would absolutely require that the engine were on to use the washdown pump (independant of whether you wanted warm water) because I do not believe a washdown pump could pull through the intake pump when off - at best it would put excess strain on the washdown pump.

If I wanted the ability to have warm washdown from a closed cooling system, I think I'd put in a second exchanger and allow the heated antifreeze to heat the washdown water but that might cause issues too - for the motor or for the washdown pump.

I have an old diaphram pump that I may repair for a washdown pump. It has the drawing power to lift water a long way so I thought I would just drop a weighted screened hose over the side into lake michigan. I just tightened up my engine water intakes - expensive new hose, no water leaks, no air leaks. I would not mess with a critical engine cooling system to get some water up on the deck. My current wash down system is a bucket on a rope.

my express has a washdown pump that is tied into a water spicket in the raw water inlet (the same one used to winterize).i leave the valve off because i'm afraid it may pull air back through the pump when the engine is running.if i really need it i can turn the valve on long enough to use it.seems like a bad setup to me .

I have a r/w thruhull not used from removed genset. pipe it to a copper line rap copper line around exhuast to pump to hoes? Only a brain storm not tried yet. what do you all think????
