I remember reading, somewhere, about a source for the plastic tubing to replace the yellowed (and one is now broken) cylindrical type lights...

Anyone? Thanks!

Hi John,

Please give more details. I have 120Vac cylindrical glass "tube" lights and 12Vdc dome lights in my cabin.

John: I recall someone posting here several years ago that they made one out of 4" (or so) PVC pipe.
(Interesting that you and I hang fishing poles about the same way, same place)

I'm looking for the 'lamp shades' also, have to think about the PVC. At first blush, I'd think it's too dense, but maybe the more directional lighting would be desirable?.

As to those hot, hot tubular bulbs, we had draperies on the boat when we bought it. The bulbs did a great job of burning the fabric. I'm amazed the boat never went up in flames. We did a pretty easy changeover last year, two guys, about 3 hours, to rope lights. We fastened them inside the valance as low as we could, clamping with plastic cable clips every 8" so the rope lights wouldn't sag. They give good light and we don't have to keep extra marshmallows on hand for the bonfire.

My boat does not have any of the 12V lights that were the subject of the original post. Regarding the "hot, hot tubular bulbs" (LOL - they discolored my blinds too) I am experimenting with some CFLs (dimmable because someone put a dimmer on those lights) - 15 watts of light but using 4 watts each. If that doesn't seem to be enough light, I may put in daisy chainable florescents and replace the dimmer switch.

Well, not to get into national politics, but CFL's are (so far) way too cold on the light spectrum and really delicate. If you don't have any luck, seriously try out the rope lights, no muss, no fuss, no exposed glass and much easier on the eyes. And, I didn't have to change out the dimmer!

Had a plastic company in Cleveland cut clear cylinders and sand blast them to give shade effect. The cylinders are approx 2.5X thicker than originals but same diameter.
They sell a special bit to drill the hole for the wiring. Did not use the wooden peg, just the little nut through a single hole in the back.

Don't have any pics at the moment but will find and post the place that cut the plastic.

I have found LED replacements for all my lights, except for screw base (E25) lights in the cockpit, whichA are 12v CFL using standard sockets ( used to have 40w 12v incandescents there). One reason was that the incandescent bulbs get so hot as noted. I also wanted longer battery life at anchor, I have no generator. The only filament bulbs that I have left are running lights, where power use is unimportant. I think that I posted the sources for LED bulbs at one point, but you can get them anywhere now....

I like the idea of the rope lights. Are they LEDs also?
