Looking for reviews of on-board battery tenders...
I understand they should be located away from the engine compartment, any other shielding needed?
Obviously want to be vigilant for stray current issues...

What's everyone recommneding these days?

The restoration project goes on.....

I scored a xantrex 40 amp 3 stage charger on Ebay for 1/2 price. They have since upgraded their line adding better water resistance, world wide AC input and an improved 3 stage charging program. Maybe some of the older yellow case models will show up on Ebay. I'm happy with mine. It is engine room safe and handles 3 batteries. The idea behind the higher price chargers is that they have a computer controlled charging program that will charge the battery quickly but will not overcharge. You can plug it into the AC system and forget about it.

If you want a "tender" that does not handle a load, you can get one that de-sulfates the battery by putting in a pulsed current at intervals, along with an amp or two for maintenance. They are about 40-50 bux.

This is all you need if you do not use the battery when you are not on the boat. I do not have them but some folks swear by them.

I use an old ferroresonant transformer that provides float voltage only, around 13.3 volts, along with a solar cell that provides each battery with an amp of trickle charge. If I lose dock power, at least my trickle charge works.
