I am looking at a depth sounder (fish finder). That has a transom mount transducer.

On an inbord a thru hulll is recomended.

Does anyone have a transom mount tranducer on their boat?

Does it work ok?

Yes, and it not only works great, it's easier to keep clean of barnacles and slime. Mine is a Humminbird unit that has given me zero trouble.

Jeff

PS: The idea of having a BIG hole in the hull for a thru-hull makes me nervous. No way could the sump pumps keep up if something cleaned that unit off and left a hole that big.

One reason they recommend a thru-hull transducer on an in-board is turbulence. On a boat with an outboard, the props are aft of the transom. But on an inboard, the props are forward of the transom and could cause water and bubble turbulence to screw up your readings if you mount the transducer in the wake of the props. The sonar will get dispursed by air bubbles in the prop wash.

If you go with the transom mount, first take your boat for a cruise and observe the water as it passes by the transom. The darker the water the fewer bubbles. Mount it there. That's where you will get the cleanest water and the best performance.

Good point, but mine works perfectly and has since the initial installation. (Watch the damn thing blow up next trip!) If anything, the turbulence of the prop wash keeps the sensor clean.

'Fraid not, Shane--and I looked through a zillion photos. It's about 6 inches left of the centerline.

about how far below the bottom of the hull is it in the water? on I/O and Outboard, usually 3/4" does it, but I am not sure with inboard though...

I actually followed the manufacturer's reecommendations, and it worked.

I have a Garmin fishfinder with a transom mounted transducer (skimmer). It works great. Even though I know my water very well the boat does not move without it turned on. I not only want to know the depth of the water I also want to know what the bottom profile looks like.

I did not want to drill any holes in the hull for the mounting bracket or transducer cable on my twin eng
Express. Instead, I fab'ed a small bracket from aluminum stock that I clamped to the starboard exhaust pipe. I bolted the skimmer to the bracket at the recommended depth below the bottom of the hull. I ran the cable back in the scupper drain thru-hull fitting and out a small slit in the deck scupper drain hose. Result, a neat installation with no holes.

I think the caution about using a transom mounted skimmer on an inboard is related to the turbulence caused by the struts, props and rudders. The turbulence crates a potential for poor sounding readings. However, our boats do not typically go fast enough for that to be a problem. As I said my Garmin works great.
