After reading the thread on explosions after fueling I found my starbaord engine had the same problem as Pfhlaw's.
I have not traced any wires for shorts, I suspect age/heat as the cause of failure but, I noticed this grease/ooze, fish egg like substance on top of the tranny. Upon closer inspection I realized the voltage regulator overheated and melted the sand/epoxy filler. Luckily the batteries are new and in top shape. We had just come back from a weekend trip and putting 70 gals of gas in the boat. Cant be too careful. I like to just sit in the engine room once a month and tug on stuff, look things over etc. That's the only way I would have found this before it was too late.
Going to replace both port and starboard and inspect the other components. If I had my way I'd scrap the entire ignition system and install brand new everything.

Bob:
The unit that failed is electronic control unit (ecu) aka electronic control module aka ignition control module aka voltage regulator (often confused with alternator voltage regulator).
I believe mine failed because of the short in the positive wire from the alternator which you can see in the pic. That wire is always live whether or not the engine is running.
Vibration cut the insulation where it crossed a sharp edge.

I never heard it called that, I can't see the pic either. The ecu is parked next to voltage regulator I was thinking your voltage regulator had a melt down.

Pic: Peter is referring to the first post in this thread, the one put up by GB49. If you can't see it, you may have a browser issue. Reads pretty well here.

Same here with the red X in white box. I called it a voltage regulator in another post and thats how I found it at the parts place. About 2 1/2" square metal about 1" deep with the wax-like material inside.

This was sent as a Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. The resource .ashx?a=1141 , looks like it was transferd to text instead of a pic. Said its dimensions are 28 x 30. May not be from a Micosoft or Windows protocol. Maybe Apple?? Who knows.

Seems I've seen that before...

... on a chow line tray in the Navy.

... oh, wait, that's not a tray... missed the holes at the ends. Unless that's for a lanyard so the Marines in the area wouldn't drop it.
