Cummins new engines are smaller, high rev diesels. They will also fit.

I wish the little 4 cylinder 4045 JD 150 HP would work, We have a JD dealer right here in town. I'm afraid that 150 HP would be a little low.

How much HP was the guy getting out of the perkins engines? You mentioned a person put perkins in & was getting about 20 MPH WOT.

Diesels are expensive is an understatement. I called 2 outfits and asked about Yanmar diesels for my 32 sedan. Not only do the engines need to be converted, but the trannys and the controls and a bunch of other unexpected stuff like fuel return lines, mufflers, fuel tank procedures etc. The bill...$70K.. Yep 70K. The engines alone were 20K (new) Maybe someday when it is the norm and the market drives down prices for all of us. Biodiesel makes my green side smile...the cost of gas engines makes my wallet smile, relatively speaking of course.

.."Biodiesel makes my green side smile..."

Just as long as it isn't ethanol-diesel. Recent Boat US article said that brew is more dangerous than gasoline! If people with factory diesel boats start using it, there will be many a tragedy since their boats are not spark protected like a gasoline-engined boat.

What ever happened to LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE AKK AKK !!!! Sit at the dock and play with the girls!! 1 1/2 miles to the gallon is hard to beat!! Hear in Fl. we drink more ligour than that off shore fishing!! The reason you havent heard from the OLD QEASER is his hinnie is still down in the bilge working it of ftrying to figure out how he lost his mind trying to do what I did when I changed out my engs in my 70 ft cat. If you think it's gonna cost you 5000.00 its easy to figure just double it add some more and then you will still be back at 1 mile per gal. Ask my doctor buddy went from gas to diesel on a 36 ft sportfish spent $60,000 same speed 1 mile per gal!! Gas eng 7000.00 Diesel eng 20,000.00 how much gas canyou buy for the diff!! Unless you are going on a long gruise oF to the Virgin Islands go GAS we all grew up working on them and then you wont have to go to diesel school like I did to work on them! Think about it, on the conversion ,first your intakes are too small along with your exhaust along with your air intakes vents, plus your trannys and shafts and fuel lines and tanks.
Now lets think about props. I just spent $8000.00 and quit!! This is after listening to every prop and engine guru from Miami to Australia!! I have 4 sets of spares. The good news is I run 16 knots at 1600 turns 4 gal burn per eng. LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE!!! Sorrydog

"The guy" with the Perkins engines was me. They are 120 hp each, at 2800 rpm. I know this sounds like not much, but the rating is actual output and is "continuous commercial". There is no "cruise speed" or "WOT", there is just 2800 rpm. The engines do not sound strained, they just sound like diesels.

I might be able to get another couple of knots with the right props -- I got a lot of help on this on the other forum.

70K is starting money.... Assume 50% to 75% more for the auxiliary stuff and rewiring and ....

I hit 90K with Gas and rewiring. 70K is either really cheap or really not including the full labor.

That perkins is a wonderful engine, we ran one in a workboat farming on an island in the Mississippi river. What size boat did you put them in?

Getting 2 mi per gallon on the 70 ft Catamaren I redid ,built by Aluminum Cruisers in 1960. installed 2-671 detroit deisels 285 hp. naturals Added 2nd story with the help of structural engineers, installed 2 fuel tanks 330 gal ea. Bahamas bound this summer!! See pics at www.sorrydog.com Am about to put on before and after pics on site. Click mermaids and tales on site and enjoy the Jaguar cherleaders in the hotub I used them to help me charter the boat for awhile, click on some of the archives and see more fun and why I have grey hair!!
Back to the speed on the boat still playing with props, can't get engs to turn over 1900 turns, should go to 2350 rpms. Spent 8000.00 on props and listened to every guru from Florida to Australia, got frustrated and learned to live with 2 mi per gal, cruise 16 knts. Now working on the theory of. Find the biggest 3 blade prop you can swing and modify it, cupps, pitch ect. I have tried 9 different props so far. 4 blades slow me down, any prop gurus out there, maybe when I added the approx 10,000 lbs to the top, I changed the attitude and now have a hull limitation. How about it fastjeff, any thoughts?? Sorrydog

Just take the best ones you have and get a prop shop to take an inch of pitch off.

Jeff

PS: 16 knots at 2 MPG is pretty impressive!

Paul,

I have a '75 32' sedan with flybridge. Perkins are easy to get parts for, my 6's are in every other big forklift or jobsite generator in the world. They are all iron casting, even the oil pan, and are bulletproof. Although I hope never to test that last virtue....
