Took about 2 1/4 quarts to refill the things. Made up that metal receiver can to prevent using that tiny cup that came with the Mighty-Vac tool. (An oil change rig would be easier to use.) The rubber tube has to hug the left side of the tranny case when inserted or it just sucks air.

What do you use in the trans for fluid?

The old books say Chrysler ATF A or Dextron.

My guess is you can use ATF 3 or 4 or Dextron 3.

I am looking at two Borg Warner manuals. One says Dexron Type F or anything that meets the C-3 spec. DO NOT CHANGE BRANDS. And if engine speeds don't exceed 3,000 rpm, premium 30 Weight motor oil (NOT 40W) is ok.

The other manual says Dexron III.

GO figure.

I've used Dexron III for years without problems.

Did mine back in 02. Had no idea when they were last done, if ever.
There was quite a difference in oil color. Used Wolfs Head ATF. Seems to shift smoother.

From what you hear, a marine tranny will last decades with an occasional oil change and maintaining the level (critical!) We'll see. So far (with one exception) I've done my part!

Most of the time you can expect to get about a quart out of 1:1 transmission.. a bit more in a 1: 1.5.

Changing oil is critical to longevity of these reliable units.

I change every 50 hrs or once a season whichever comes first. If it has been a long time since a change.. I reommend change oil.. run a few hrs and change again.

Avoid Type F fluids.. Dextron II or III is fine. Type F is for Ford transmissions and is a completely different blend.

safe boating,
dave
