My starbord engine is using more fuel than the port. I filled both tanks and ran them down to close to half out. The starbord took approx 3 to 4 gal more than the port side.

My engines have only 15h on them since rebuild.

Is this normal?

Do you have a Generator? If so which tank does it draw from? My genny draws from the starboard tank. If you dont there are several different reasons that could cause this. A few that I can think of right now are... Fresh rebuilt motors...rings seating at different rates will effect the fuel burn. Tune up of the engine(timing, plugs,cap,rotor...ect) Carb adjustments including the CHOKE. Throttle position...may not have been sync'd as close as you think. Good Luck

If you are using the fuel gages to determine "half full", then you are kidding yourself. The only way you can see if one is thirstier than the other (without Flo Scans) is to fill 'er up, run her for several hours, then repeat and note the gallons required.

(Jeff: I think he was talking about actual fuel amount to refill, not using the gauges).

I had the same problem two seasons ago. Turned out that the port engine was mis-timed. It was consuming 15% more fuel on some fillups. Now, they are virtually identical. Of course, there are reasons other than timing to account for one engine sucking up fuel - good luck in your search for the cause.

I'm guessing that the major reason my starboard engine was using more gas than the port was because of a really bad cutlass bearing... equaled out some after new shafts and cutlass bearings but I still have a small difference in fuel mileage. It's probably unusual in our older boats (or newer boats) that the fuel usage would be identical in both motors; close but not equal. However, 10% or more difference might indicate an issue you would want to investigate. Just a guess.
