Wanted to trblshoot temperature sender/gauge problem with ignition sw. on. Removed two wires from both coil + terminals. Went forward to the helm and saw I had let the smoke out of the Judson Engine Syncronizer. The wires on the port engine were separated but the two starboard wires were touching together( wire to choke and ignition wire) as they were still held so by the rubber cap/insulator. Looks as tho it might have also got the alternator regulator or the rectifier.
The Judson thingy has two red & two green wires. We chopped them all and finally learned that joining the two red wires gave us ignition to the port side. Joining the two green gave us melted insulation on the jumper. Long time tracing and cutting and we finally had ignition and ran the engine for couple minutes. After a few minutes of poking around and going hmmmm, we're back to the short....but we will finally lick that calf.
My question is - what caused the smoke to escape in the Judson thingy?? The auto choke has pwr to it all the time the ignition is on anyway. The coil primary was not there at that time but I can't see how that would cause what happened.
I hope some smarter than me reads this(everyone's gotta be!) and can help me make sense of it....If only I hadn't wanted to meter the temp sender ckt with the ignition on!
