I am now the proud owner of a slightly used "Good Automatic Windlass" anchor winch. With the winch I received 2 selenoids with a 30 amp fuse and a 60 amp breaker box.

I think I can figure this one out without to much trouble, but a wiring diagram would come in handy if anyone has one or can suggest.

Thanks

If you want to reverse the winch, essential if you want a self-tending anchor, then you will need a reversing switch. This actually has two relays in it. The schematic for my boat shows a reversing switch wired for three operating stations - wheel, flybridge, and at the foredeck itself. It is at www.geocities.com/dougmrose under my Marinette wiring.

You can get a good reversing setup for cheap at: https://www.surpluscente...asp?UID=2009082619062706

Most windlass motors have two wires; this one has three. My diagram is not correct for this unit, I wrote too soon. Peter has the correct diagram.

THANKS for that diagram!

It appears that "Good" windlasses have a seperate winding for reverse. I played with it on the bench tonight and I'll be damed if I can figure out how it is supposed to freefall. I had thought that the "down" switch would throw a clutch selnoid but it just backs the winch down at about the same speed as it pulls it up. I will try and keep you all updated.

My winch was not original equipment apparently, and it does not have a clutch, just a capstan. If there is a clutch, there would have to be a lever or another wire for it.

In florida, letting the winch wind out with the motor is ok, since one is usually anchoring in shallow water. In deep water, the clutch would certainly speed things up.

Joe, "GOOD" Makes several different anchor windlasses, SOME do have the free fall ability but NOT ALL, eventhough they all look the same. MY OLD Good would wind out for about 5-7 seconds when you hit the switch to Lower then would go into freefall mode untill you hit the switch to Raise for a few seconds and it locked in again. It worked GREAT for several years of anchoring. Your anchor rode has to be in good shape (soft/flexible)and kept clean. Once it gets hard or extremely dirty the windlass will get kind of funky on you. It wont lower, wont raise, wont lock in.

Good luck with it. They are great, not just "Good" hahahha
