my newer engine with fresh water cooling seems to run from 170 to 200 degrees .the old engine runs around 140 to 150.they both have 142 degree t-stats.
the water flow is good and heat exchanger raw water side is clean. these are the thoughts that i have .ways to rule them out or other seguestions would be a great help.
1. is this normal for an engine that is not broke in yet?(less than 5 hours).
2.running lean. (brand new 1409 eb did not help)
3. bad sending unit? (will check intake temp with temp meter)
4.normal for full fresh water cooled system.(warm raw water)

thanks in advance

1. is this normal for an engine that is not broke in yet?(less than 5 hours).

Absolutely not.

2.running lean. (brand new 1409 eb did not help)

If it was lean enough to cause that much heat it would have seized.

3. bad sending unit? (will check intake temp with temp meter)

That would be my first move. Use an infrared temp gun and shoot the body of temp sensor in the intake manifold.

4.normal for full fresh water cooled system.(warm raw water)

No.

Look for an air leak before the raw water pump: a loose hose clamp, a strainer gasket leak, etc. I had to make an o-ring to seal the cover o that strainer, which cuased overheating on mine. I assume the rubber impeller is in good shape?

I would re-check the timing also, slow timing causes hotter running.

Closed cooling systems run warmer and should be running a 160 stat. Antifreeze mix should be approx 50/50. If antifreeze is too heavy it will cause engines to run warmer.

the timing was 5 before before tdc.
the 140 deg was trying to keep the temp lower i was wanting to hook up the water heater heat exchanger that has a 170 limit.(later)
i have an infrared temp gun i'll take it with me friday.
the impeller is new the flow is strong and i havent got strainers.(i know i should)

thanks tim

it seems to be running alittle cooler put on propand cleaned the water intake . ran it good and hard (first time above 20mph).then problems with both engines right at the dock.new one low voltage to switch .old one flooding at idle.then tore up new prop without engine running.this is the third or forth time the boat has ran good until i get back to the marina then it runs like
s%#t.
