Engine will run fine, both at idle and at speed for about 30 - 60 min. and then dies quite suddenly. Within a few seconds the rpm drops very fast, runs extremely rough for the last second or two and then stalls completely. I can get it started again, time after time, but will only run for a couple seconds. Go back the next day and it runs fine again for quite a while.

Seems to be an ignition issue. If I bump the starter as its stalling, (but before it stops completely) it revs up again, only to start dying again as soon as I release the starter switch (I know - very bad for the starter).

Seems to be heat related. Went to the boat today and it took well over an hour just running at the dock varying speed between idle and 2000 rpm before it started acting up.

I've changed the ballast resistor and the ignition module but still acts up.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Try swapping the coils on the engines. We had a neighbor who had a similar problem. The coil would stop working when it got hot.

Bumping the starter as the motor stall sends 12 volts (instead of 9 or so) to the coil, if only for a brief moment.

Try this: Rig up a jumper from the battery terminal cable on the solenoid (always 12 volts) to the + terminal on the coil. Use alligator clips for both ends. When the motor dies, hook up the jumper and fire it up again. If she keeps running, you have one of the following problems:

1. Bad coil

2. Bad ECU (module)

3. Bad ballast resistor (break inside you can't see).

mine did something like that last week it was a voltage drop to the switch.i started messing in the dash and the problem went away.i suspect the ammeter having high resistance.

I've checked the water separator and it was clean - no water at all.

I thought about the coil, and I think I'll try it next, but the engine starts even after it gets warm, it just won't keep running. Seems like if it was the coil, it wouldn't restart at all, but I've got a new spare coil so its worth a shot.

I've already changed both the ballast resistor and the ECU, but maybe I got really "lucky" and one of the replacements is bad too. I'll give the jumper wire to the coil a try.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

My money is with Jeff on this one. Sounds like it "could" be the classic coil breakdown.
Suggest you swap coils and see if the problem moves to other engine.

One other thing to look at: Those crappy connectors to the ballast resistor.

If yours is like mine, it was about to fall out at any time (and did once, blowing an opportunity to overnight with my buddy Joel). I had to tie wrap mine in place to get them to behave.

Ballast resistor connections were clean and snug, so I don't think its that. Plus I got virtually the same voltage readings at the coil as I had on the good engine. I'll swap out the coil next and see what happens.

I had the exact problem and it was the coil.

Thanks everyone. I went up to the boat this morning and installed a new coil I had in my spare parts kit. Ran the engine at the dock for about 2.5 hours at 1500 - 2000 rpm w/o any problems. Seems like the new coil did the trick, but I guess I won't know for sure until I get it out on the water, but looks promising.

Thanks for the help.
