How could I check that my engines were winterized properly? I wrote in another thread that my company I hired to winterize my boat said they pulled the bow plug but they didn't, and now I'd like to check and see how well they did everything else. Do I use one of those tools that you check antifreeze with in a car radiator? Looks like a turkey baster with little balls in it? And if so where would I check? How about if they fogged the engines and treated the gas? They are a well known company around here but I'd still like to check.. Any ideas?

They do make a hydrometer for Non Tox antifreeze but they are expensive and very difficult to find.

Your best bet is take a sample from your engine block and exhaust manifolds. Put it in a clear glass or plastic container. You then can take the same and color check it with a fresh bottle of RV anifreeze. It shouldl be close to the same.

Check your winterizing contract! Most and all should include a clause that they are responsible for any damage to engines, manifolds, water lines etc. If not... then save the money and do it yourself.

Years ago I had an entire engine on a different boat replaced when they forgot to winterize one of my engines on a twin. The engines were very old so it was a win win for me.

If your marina or yard will not stand behind their work then I would not stand for it.

safe boating,
dave

So how do I get the sample? Out of the petcocks on the block? I asked them if there was a line on the contract that stated they were responsible for all damages if any occur to areas that they said they covered, and I basically got a hem haw no response but yes we would certainly cover the area we did and guarantee the work. Is it in writing? No. Did that make me feel better? No.

Even if it was in writing, would they back it up? I doubt it. So, it would mean going to court, and trying to collect......
You can take samples and put them in the freezer to test them. What you really have to do is learn your boat and do it all yourself.

1. Using regular AF is a violation of the law.

2. Nothing wrong with the Pink Stuff.

If you have a refractometer, you can measure the percent propylene glycol in the test fluid by just looking into the refractometer. It only takes one drop of fluid to test the fluid. Here is one on ebay that reads in both % glycol and freeze point.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/...amp;hash=item45f99f3577

Just drain a little antifreeze from the block. If it is not at least 30% glycol, you might have a problem.

My boat is on the hard.BigM
Think I use the blue RV anti-freeze -100 and run it through the engines via the pickups under the boat.It mixes with the water that is still in the block and mufflers. I use a 5 gallon bucket, long hose to reach between the rear exhauste and the water pickups connected to a suction cup.Eh? Then I start the engine and run it at idle till I get it hot. [above180 degrees]I found -100 RV antifreeze for $6.99 a gallon, cheaper the automotive concentrated antifreeze @ Boater world in Wyandotte. MI Dancing Pink stuff [-50 degrees]is good for the fresh water system, head and shower sump.

I have a question about engine winterizing . Have anyone ever use the hot dipsticks that i use to see up north when i worked there? The question is if you drained the logs and block, or not, do you think the oil would keep the block warm enought during the cold months here in TN. I do have a heater between the engines and have been adding a small oil heater, convection, the past few years when it really got cold.

That'd be like Russian Roulette with 5 bullets in your old six shooter! Even if the heater doesn't crap out when you're not around, heating the oil does nothing for all of those pockets where water is trapped (like the raw water pump).

Pink Stuff ain't that expensive--and that's me saying it!

Thanks Jeff, wasn't even thinking about the raw water pump; DOH!. Do use the pink in the water system and hot water heater but have not in the engine. Will consider putting some in when the time comes.

I used the pink stuff last winter in the good ole cold U.P. of michigan. Not to say that the -100 isn't better I just had the pink stuff available.

Don't rub it in too much Shhh Seems you are not far enough South to rub it in at all. We had a week in the single digits last year Sick Don't get caught with your pants down! I winterize mine for a couple of months just to be safe. Never know when bad weather will hit and marina power will go out.

I guess you may be lucky enough to have your own dock...that's a different story.

Tundrarules: I'm just messing with the guys from up north.I did not know anybody is out there. It seems that out of the 624 members only a few ever respond. We did have some cold weather last year. But a week after it gets 10 degrees it will be 60. I was able to look at your Albums. The wife looks great and so does the Boat!
