Jimski2 ,

Nice article on aluminum welding; good to see something posted. Some good info for the average weekend flashers but more of a sales pitch. A little to much $$$ for the regular fokes.

Does anyone know of some places that can do extensive hull modifications to a 32' marinette in the Detroit -Toledo-Cleveland areas. I'm talking about lengthening the aft hull, cutting off the keel and changing the shape of the bow to be flatter bottomed. Need to get the draft as shallow as possible. Thanks

First Off Welcome to the site Canjet73Applause

Wow that’s what I call a major overhaul to the hull. Whistle The only possible way I can see to get a shallower
draft is to tunnel the props & raising the rudders like one of the plastic boat once did but the draw back is Very Poor steerage at low RPM’s that was the demise of that Co. along with the late 80's boat debacle. Besides a under taking of what U plan would surely cost a fortune unless U did all the work your self. If I may inquire what is the need for such a shallow draft Think

I'll be going with berkley jet drives. Already have them. Props and rudders will be eliminated.

The boat will be going on a river that typically gets very shallow at summers end and into fall. The only power boats that ply this river now are sub 25' and mostly all jet drives with the odd air boat or hovercraft to spice things up.

What I just wrote above overstates the activity on this river. Most days you'll hardly see a canoe go by.

I want to put a much bigger boat on it than has ever been there before.

Truth be told there is a paddle wheel river boat 120' x 35' with a 2'4" draft that takes short trips but its range is less than 3km, yes km this river is in western Canada

I'm in Ohio looking to buy a boat. Was in Michigan yesterday. The problem is I'm not having much luck finding a place around here to do the work I need done. I'd prefer to get it done around here because at home it will cost a lot more.

Thanks

Canjet73,
Here’s a thought try this John A claims he also does retro fitting to Marinette’s

Note: There is a Marinette, Inc company run by John Althouse, you can ask him about parts. I recommend thiscompany. John will answer questions. He has all the facility’s to undertake a job of this magnitude

He’s the new owner of Marinette Inc.

Even though he’s in the U. P. of Mich it would be much easier & shorter distant at jobs end to transport it to Alberta.

By the Way what size Marinette are U looking for there are a few in my area up for sale including mine that is turn key ready I own a 32' 1989 F/B sedan it’s stored in MI.
well good luck in your endeavors

My 1966 Marinette has a bow that differs from my friends '84

His has two distinct angles. One from the rub rail down to about where my splash guard is. And a deeper V from there to the keel.

Me thinks that he wants my bow curves.

My brother has a 25 foot aluminum jet boat that we used on the Yehtna River in Alaska. We upgraded it to a 460 Ford for more power and speed. It is fine except when you run it up on a gravel bar. A lot of "bull work" then. The pump would suck up rocks and stones from the bottom and you had to clear the impellers every now and then. Fuel costs were the reason the boat sits on the trailer now. Smaller boats are used now with jet/OB's or power trim and tilt to save on props.
Anyway, with all the mishaps, the aluminum hull was never hoed or really dented up too bad.

well I talked to John at Marinette and he says he can do what I need done to the hull. That's a bit out out of the way but not too bad so I'm definately considering it especially since my options seem limited.

Strange thing is I already called Marinette a few weeks ago and got a recording that said the # was out of service. John said they'd been having some phone issues due the bankruptcy of charter communications, so that might explain it

I used to have a 28' Marinette made in the mid-seventies. The hull was very beautiful and flat-bottomed, would have been perfect for a river or lake. I considered putting in a jet drive, but ended up using the prop/rudder that came with it.

My '75 32' has a different hull. The forefoot is deep, designed to give better performance in a chop. This change was made to give better rough water performance, I would guess.

You should probably look for one of the shallow hulls instead of trying to modify a newer hull, which would be pretty expensive. The jet drive is a must, check out the Aussies who use jet boats on rivers a lot.

Been back home for a few days now. Didn't choose a boat yet.

As has been mentioned a couple times previously, there are different hull shapes on various years of marinettes. Suspected then confirmed through John A that the change was made in 1975. The hulls post '74 are called canoe hulls because they look like there's a canoe stuck to the bottom. So my search is restricted to boats built in 74 or earlier.
