I know this subject has been beaten to a pulp, BUT, it
appears that I may have a need to convert my 1986
32 Sedan Bridge to salt water motors. Does anyone
have a quick and dirty "How To" check list to get this
done and approx cost? Maybe, just maybe Big M fans,
the "LUNA SEA" may be headed to the warm, salty
waters of FL.

I studied the subject a couple of years ago. I lost an engine to freezing when the drunks at the boatyard failed to winterize it properly. I figured that switching from raw water to a sealed coolant system ("fresh" water system) would simplify winterizing and lessen potential freeze damage. Also I would like to do the Great Loop which would take me out of the great lakes and into salt water.

I found some kits on-line for about $800 bucks. It didn't look that hard. You basically pump the raw water through a heat exchanger instead of the block. I remember that you had to put a new gasket under the exhaust risers to seal off the raw coolent flow from the engine and switch out the thermostat.

I have never seen a step by step presentation on this forum about installing a "Fresh" water kit. If you install one please do us this service.

Just don't try to convert an old, rusted up raw water cooled motor to FWC. The rust flaking off will continuously plug the heat exchangers. It's been done, but boy did they suffer!

Norb..perhaps the thing for you to do, with Jeff's yellow flag raised, is just install a fresh water tap (groco makes one) in the raw water intake and flush the engines after each use in the salt water. The outboard engine guys do that regularly. You could run the fw line up to topsides to make the job easier. It would add no more than 5 or 10 minutes to your shutdown after a cruise.

wow jeff thanks for that post and thanks to norb also I was going to switch my 87 chryslers to fwc, but i never thought about the heat exchangers, i think i will heed joels advise thats agreat idea thanks guys im loving this site. goodluck norb on your trip!

yooper, ebasic.com is a great site for Chrysler motors. Thanks for
the tip and I'm sure the rest of the Big M folks will like it too.
