Before painting the boat, I like to remove the existing button studs which are fastened with rivets, most of them will be deleted and the required ones renewed. The question is ?. Do I drill out the rivets & what material do I use to fill the 1/8" hole, so that it will not show through the new paint.

The yard that painted our boat last winter used Evercoat Metal-2-Metal filler to fill the small unwanted holes in the cabin top and deck. I would suggest you use a countersink to taper the hole so there is more surface area for the filler to stick to.

Because it was compatable with the primer, I used Interlux InterProtect Watertite Epoxy Filler.

Hi Dennis,
I am also using Interlux Brightsite, did you also countersink the holes for better filling as Rob suggested , and did the filled holes show through the finished paint.

I had zillions of them, filled the holes with JB-Weld, Sanded the entire overhead to bare metal, etch coated and then sprayed on some Pettit Easy Proxy. That was 3 years ago and no problems.
I stuck some masking tape underneath so the epoxy would not drip clean through the hole and end up where you don't need it.

It is a good idea to countersink them. I used a drill bit chucked into a T-handle ratchet hand tap. A couple of twists with a sharp bit will do it.
