Hello All,
Here is my question, I am getting ready to start replacing my aft decking and need to know what process should I do or material to use to seal the marine wood. I was told by a fellow member here to use Phenolic Resin, is this going to be a hard product to find?
Thanks in advance,
Rob

Ya Mike,
I decided after many years of climbing a ladder to do work on other boats we've have had I would be lazy and build a pair of steps. LOL
My dad is my partner on this boat, I told him I did it for him because he was getting old. Lol If by chance you are running by there on a Sat or Sun stop by.
Rob
Oh ya thanks for the info

Rob,

I found what resin I used. I have a whole writeup on the cockpit replacement. I'll zip and see if I can email it.

Here is the exact info, "All pieces were laid out on sawhorses and coated w/ Pettit 2012 Super Dry Sealer, a phenolic resin similar to Minwax wood hardener. I thinned it even though it was like water just to make the quart last.
I then used 1 quart of Pettit white 3175 epoxy paint. I also thinned this and it went on like water, it dried just fine. "

Phenolic resins are not truly waterproof. I would use an epoxy resin such as WEST epoxy (not related to West Marine, but you can buy it there) or System Three. It takes about three coats, first one cut with thinner around 10% (good quality lacquer thinner is OK). I use 4 oz glass cloth and epoxy if the surface needs wear resistance. Problems with water usually occur through the edges, and I like to use fiberglas tape on the edges as well. If you are covering with something like Nautolex, forget the glass. Epoxy is not sunproof, so must be painted.

That said, Karl would be the expert on using Petit products, I wonder if he will post his writeup?

Guy's thanks for all the help. I am planning on going back with the Nautolex over my new marine floor. Which one of these products will work best? the Pettit or the West epoxy? I have found the Pettit and after sealing do I still need to paint?
Thanks,
Rob

Make sure you treat the ends/sides of the wood. My guess is that a couple of coats of any decent paint will work to repel moisture. I guess that because the factory just applies the Nautolex on top of wood. My boat is 22 yrs old and the Nautolex has just about expired and I'm sure the wood is on its last legs, too. But that's a long time. I'd love to replace it before someone puts their foot thru the deck but the thought of getting at the screws from below is scary.
