Very interesting story. Avro built historic aircraft, my Dad flew the Avro Lancaster in the PAF for the RAF, so I found this to fill in a bit more of the details of what happened after the war.
As for welding, most aluminum alloys can't be welded.The alloys and the heat treating and any cladding are ruined by the welding process. So only a few alloys should be welded, thats what we use for our boats. Most others are riveted. Think of the canoes and skiffs and aircraft floats you've seen, lots of rivits holding them together.
