This was posted by FastJeff Perry in another section of the forum. Some of the items are specific to his boat setup. As we pick up some other useful to-do's, we will add them here.

Slip Leaving List:

1. Port Perko switch On/ Starboard Perko switch to BOTH
2. Blowers, GPS, Trim Tabs, Depth Finder ON
3. Dink boat secured with chain and damper line
4. Turn down refrigerator to setting “2” and lock
5. Vee berth port holes and galley windows closed
6. Loose items stored, blinds up and tied, curtains pulled aside
7. Start engines. Engine alarm to ON.
7a (Editor add) Check oil level. Some check battery water every trip.
8. Check gauges, and check water flow at exhausts
9. Main AC (power & air conditioner) switches and water heater to OFF. Important to do this before next step or things could fry including captain/mate.
10. Disconnect power cord
11. Disconnect stern lines
12. Remove spring line
13. Pole the boat out (we bow in)

Leaving the Marinette for Home List:

1. Remember to take the (to do/ items needed) list home!
2. Bilge pumps on AUTO and TESTED!
3. Both Perko switches to OFF
4. Dink boat secured, motor covered, and locked
5. All lines double checked (including dink boat clip lines)
6. Hot water heater OFF
7. Refrigerator locked
8. Cabin windows closed and locked--CHECK

10. Shades and blinds closed
11. Things going home (check your List, stupid)

I don't understand. How would leaving the main breaker and/or air conditioning breaker on cause an electrical hazzard to us or the equipment?

I always disconnect my shore power at the shore outlet FIRST when leaving port and LAST when returning so that I am never handling a live cord.

Peter:

I assume you have a switch/ breaker at the shore power box that you de-energize BEFORE removing the power cord (and re-energize AFTER reconnecting it). If not, your power cord contacts are arching like crazy everytime.

I know it's the first!

Oh, I thought you were refering to the main breaker on board.

Several years ago, we had a fatality near us. A young boy was helping his grandpa leave port when he fell into the water holding a live 30 amp shore power line.

When I see a live power line coiled near an empty slip I will turn off the breaker and then politely and discretely inform the captain of the hazzard when I see him back in port. One captain told me he thought our 30 amp breaker was a GFI. It's not.
