Anode Cleaning Trick

In an effort to make good contact between hull and anodes I realized the key was the bolt through the Aluminum, not necessarily the back side of the anode as it usually gets scum between it every season. I still sand and clean both mating surfaces but this year I got the idea of cleaning the bolt holes in the skeg, rudders and trim tabs. Got couple old pistol bore brushes and using the cordless drill I shined the heck out of the holes. Ya, I used a stainless brush but I figured a small area like that would be fine. I wiped any dust away with wet rag. Also brushed the anode holes.
Now I should have good contact.

The contact area in the bolt hole is so small. I think it will get cruddy just as fast as the contact surface. Do you think a bead of top notch caulk would hold up around the anode for a couple of years to keep the scum out of the mating surfaces?

I calked around my anodes last year when I installed new ones. The calk looks good so far, won't know what's behind anodes till next year, maybe.

I don't know about caulking. I would think that has the potential to act like a "pocket" to hold crud. Rather keep water flowing between.
I pull and clean all anodes every spring, not really concerned with longevity of connection. My skeg bolts are tight so I figured I'd get the holes as clean as possible to make a good metal to metal connection for the season.

Just my $0.02.
