Took her out on a Saturday two weeks ago. Full crew. Thought i had everything covered; but it's a boat!
Went over to Terrace View to look at the boats. Spun her around and then reached for my sun glasses and hit the star. throttle then banged her in gear. Stripped the key on the shaft but no harm to the shaft slot. Boy what a dummie!!
The star. engine ran a little hot and set off my alarm so shut her down . Thermostat bad. Pulled it out the next day and tried again and still set the alarm off at 160. Pulled the raw water pump and impellers shot. Of coarse it a D-60 sherwood , 2 babes ; ordered 4. Had to back flush everything and make sure the tranny cooler was clean. Could have been worse. It was a pretty weekend!

I'll bet everyone of us has grabbed the wrong lever at some time--welcome to the club!

I assume the key in the prop sheared (or was it in the coupling)? If the later, you might have to replace the coupling and get the shaft trued or you'll never get a proper coupling alignment.

Started my port engine with the throttle wide open.
I reached for the throttle but grabbed the shifter instead and shifted into reverse at aprox. 5000 rpm.
DOH!
Friend said it looked like I was trying to pull out the piling.
No damage other than severe bruising of my pride.

I mixed up the throttle and shift cables over the winter. When I fired her up the trans was in forward and the throttle was wide open. It caused the motor to blow both head gaskets, which cost me the block (from fire slotting--I didn't find out what was happening soon enough).

No damage to the shaft, rounded the brass key on one side. Since i'm an old pipefitter , made a flange puller with 4 all thread rods for alignment to push and pull. Jeff ,also took a look at your rig you made; very impressive. Borrowed a few ideas.
Did get my new carbs. at last , got them drilled and tapped but not on yet. I guess i'm going to have spring for new flame arrestors as much as i hate too.
I don't feel so bad after hearing a few stories of others ,... Homers... Thanks. Lets all have a great season!

It took me a few minutes each to pencil grind the old flame arrestors until they fit the new carbs. (You didn't think I was gonna buy new ones, did yah!) Easy to do.
