Another Onan Generator question. I saw an ad for an Onan 4MJA-1R/96B . The guy says it doesn't run now, but it did when he bought it. It's one cylinder 4000w and he wants $325.00. Says it came out of a Marinette and he was going to install it in his 1963 31' BigM .. Any thoughts? Is it antiquated? Thought about installing it in my '72 .. Anyone? Buehler?

Might be a great find.. or.. junk. Like throwing dice in Vegas.

It will be outdated however AC is AC if it works. Most often the problems go well beyond just the engine after sitting in bilges for years.

safe boating,
dave

I guess what I'm saying is when I get it to work will it be a generator that is useful or just some quaint old hunk of iron taking up space, and needs a lot of attention to put out minimal benefits.. Does that make sense?

4000 watts is plenty, most of us don't get that through the shore power.

You don't say what you need a generator for, but I assume it is A/C, hot water, and cooking. Almost anything else can be run from the batteries. For example, I have replaced all my lights with LED bulbs to cut the battery drain at anchor....

I guess I think I need it for AC off shore and while anchoring. My water tank isn't hooked up as of yet, the guy I bought the boat from said it needed a new pump, and I am probably going to get rid of the two burner elec stove and replace it with something else. I was thinking of getting a high tech hiking stove that runs on alcohol. I think they run on alcohol. Anyway, I haven't gotten that far into the research of that yet, but for whatever reason, I feel safer using that than the elec coil stove. Is that bass-ackwards? I don't plan on staying out on the lake anchored overnight, and most docks we visit have shore power. Sooo.. Doesn't sound like a high priority I suppose. But it seems like a good idea to have a generator. And it seemed like a decent deal.. 4000w? Sounds like a lot, huh. Maybe he's wrong. I would use it mostly for the AC while out on the lake fishing, etc. Alternatives?
Thanks,
Sean

And while I'm thinking about it, anybody use one of those instant hot water deals that you hook up by the sink? Seems like that would eliminate the need for a hot water tank and lighten the load and free up space.. Just curious.

Hey, that's a neat idea! No reason why it wouldn't work just fine.

I have installed a couple of those "tankless water heaters" and they are good but require a lot of juice. My mom used a propane one for many years without incident, but we put in an electric one since the propane unit no longer meets code. Some of them require a minimum flow to work, probably not a good thing on a boat. Check to see that it works for small flow.

I have a hot water heater with the water loop for engine heat. I plan to (someday) loop either an engine's or a generator's coolant thru it to get hot water automatically. It sounds like you might want to use the generator.
