I am lothe to drill holes in a perfectly good hull so a few years back I picked up this 1/2 sphere for mounting bottom finders inside the hull. Basically you stick this dome to your hull, fill it with liquid (mineral spirts) and put your transducer in it and volia! Any how I am in need of another nut to back the one that came with my transducer (13/16 fine thread) and I was hoping one of you might have one in your spare parts pile. Anyway here are some pictures of what I have so far.

I hope it works through an ALUMINUM hull. I know it can be done with f-glass, but...

Jeff

PS: I too hate holes in the hull, so I used a transom mounted setup. Easier to clean the slime and barnacles off, and it works slick.

If I recall this method only works when AL is 3/16th or less or on glass boats. Check thru hull transducers on the web some where there’s a good write up on the subject. BTW I think I have one I’ll look for it. If U want PM me your address after I let U know that I’ve found it & it’s yours. Like Jeff said. Think

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Heck you can hear the transducer pinging and alu transmits sound so much better than glass. Thought I'd try it. Last year I had a buddy hold the unit on top of a ziplock bag full of water in the bilge and I got an image.

And Jeff, NO NEED to clean it, no drag or bubbles!

Alternative mounting method that worked for me on a FB boat: bed the xducer in silicone, being careful to slowly work it around so as to dislodge air bubbles. If you use a big enuf blob of silicone, you won't need a fairing block (to make sure the xducer shoots straight down). A big advantage here is that if the unit can't shoot thru the aluminum, getting it out of and cleared of silicone is relatively easy. Do not use the 5200 permanent adhesive.

Brass, Bronze and aluminum are not good for long boat life. Need to isolated from each other. I would try a plastic transom transducer mounted on a plastic board through bolted above the water line and sealed to the hull with "sticky stuff".

I'm not sure, but look at the nuts that mount kitchen faucets, the old ones, looks like pipe thread to me.

Just a thought.

Thanks,

Don't know if it's from a faucet nut but my local plumbing supply had one that fit in their mix and match bin.

Humming bird came back with a "not reccomended" response.

I'm this close so I might as well give her a try.

Wouldn't recommend it, Joe. If it doesn't work you'll have to drill a hole in the hull anyway, or buy a transom mounted transducer. Either choice will require a haul out.

I have the later (a Humminbird, by the way) and am very pleased with it.

The system that has been suggested may work but only at a very low level.

There is a company that makes transducers for allumiunum hulls. A google search will find it.

I would not spend the time or money on a domed mineral spirits system. But that is my opinion only. If mineral spirits are used make sure it is the orderless non-cumbustable type. \

Good luck,

dave

Here's a link to the "Alumaducer" in-hull depth transducer:

I have an old Vexliar CRT bottom finder in the spare parts bin.
I hope they make a 3 head tranducer for my Hummingbird.
I have the parts, Thunder Bird lives on a trailer, only expense is my time and some silcone caulk.
The mineral spirits I am talking about is bought at the drug store...a laxative I think.

I had the transom mount unit, it got broke. Running the wire for a new one is a greater PIA so I will let you all know how it works out.

If anyone is using the Alumaducer, a review of installation and quality of performance would be great.

The Alumaducer only works on aluminum up tp .150".
I believe ours are too thick.

I think you mean mineral OIL. Mineral SPIRITS is a paint thinner/remover.
