Manufacturers and organizations in the electronics business often miss the positive impact of the amateur and hobby community. ARRL saves thousands of lives through Ham radio and were important in the Katrina disaster.
Hobbyists in the marine industry account for "Stitch and Glue" boat building, and the non-cottage industry of marine design. Marconi started wireless radio as a hobby. Some "super performance" aftermarket marine engine guys were or are hobbyists. Personal Computer development was advanced by hobbyists. The PIC hobbyist group is huge.
Hobbyists provide alternatives. Many of us are very skilled, systems engineers, professors, students and boaters who seek control over their systems and technologies. From Matlab, to ARM and PIC, to composable CAN, to real time ethernet, to RTSJ, to verilog and DSP and everything else we can bring a lot.
Often, we do it because we can. Why take the fun out of part of my boat? Some soup up marine engines and some fix electronics.

I am still awaiting a response from Mr Spitzer.
