I just got 2 VDO tach's with hour meters built in from e-bay. One is a 3000 rpm the other a 4000 rpm. Don't know what one I'll keep with a 327 chevy. The 4000 would be more accruate at crusing speeds but the 3000 would be better for the 1500 rpm stuff either way one will be available if someone needs a good programable tach.
When I got down to wiring it up on the bench things got very confusing, Holy crap there are a lot of wiring possibilities. Thought I had it nailed from a page at egauges.com, layout looked right except for the lights were different, boy was I wrong. Thought I had been sold a piece of junk so I contacted the seller and he gave me a different wiring, the only thing the same was the ground, and he added the illumination info. egauges said that I needed a constant +12 and a switched +12 and they had a very detailed explaintion along with it. The seller was right. If anyone is looking for the wiring for a VDO model 333 0105 tach/hour meter it is as follows.
1 - Illumination
2 - VDC
3 - Ground
4 - Tach signal Ignition coil, alternator, or Inductive pickup term 1
5 - Illumination
8 - Inductive pickup term 2
