About the possibility of open source or access to the Smartcraft bus, as well as comments on an open NMEA 2000. I would never assume a manufacturer will say no to opening a spec. Brunswick may decide to open source the code and specs (but license it as proprietary to other manufacturers), as being more profitable than a closed proprietary stack.

Ask, even if the answer is 99% certain to be no. While NMEA 2000 is at least documented openly, having a lower cost SDK and stack could redirect development toward SmartCraft.

It's really about the boater, the ME hobbyist and the boat owner.

Wish you luck.

Smartcraft I believe is based on Cankingdom though I could be wrong. The latter is more suited to real time control. NMEA 2000 is more about data collection and distribution rather than connecting the steering wheel and throttles to the rudder and engines in real time.

It's reasonable to ask. Both true, yet as NMEA2000 is interoperable on the same bus as J1939 (e.g GM blocks like Crusader engines, most diesels) they can support that also.

Generally I doubt that I would put all messages on the same bus. It's easier and smarter to use a J1939 to NMEA 2000 gateway and 2 bus harnesses. That way liability is lowered by having less "misbehaving" devices on the critical bus.

In some ways, we need a Safety Critical Engine bus (A) (engine control systems for which there is no manual replacement) that and Navigation bus (B) (Navigation, autopilot, trim tabs) (Boat can return home with it).

While you in letter writing mode perhaps you should contact,

Krill Systems

SiMON Systems

Both use proprietary ethernet system for monitoring and control.

Ethernet big on large ships (Sixnet et al) and some other unmanned vehicles. Expensive though.
