I found some stuff at Lowe's that works quite well and didn't cost much. I'll be on the boat before next weekend and I will post what it is, if I can find the box.

Doug,

Would also like the info on the Lowes product. Admiral and I spent the weekend on the boat for the first time and we also noticed that when a "boomer" went thru the Cincinnati area, the seal on the forward hatch of our 32' was also allowing some water in. Admiral's all for water to float on, but only for the boat, not us in the V-berth! Shame on you

An old salt once advised me to never take a bunk under a hatch. This advice served me well when I was crewing for a living. Now that I have my own boat I sleep in the salon. I am heading for fl on thursday and hope to have the info shortly thereafter.

I used 3M Marine 101 sealant. A little messy but it worked great.

I ordered 7'. The bend radius adds to the length. I probably over ordered.

Since I had the hatch off at the time I also buffed the outside with rubbing compound and then a good wax. The smoked plastic oxidizes from the UV.
Looked like new. Also painted the aluminum trim.

Smoked plastic? I'm missing out.. My hatch would fit right in on a Triton sub.. Has something something Buffalo, New York cast into it.. I'm guessing original bullet resistant equipment..

What year is your boat? The older Marinettes had all metal hatch. Not sure when the smoked plastic hatches were first used.

Hey Karl. It's a '72.. Cast aluminum hatch that probably weighs 30lbs.. Conservative guess..

Upside down...? Sounds like something I would do on accident.. Upside down as in opens into the front berth or as in the hinge toward the bow? I guess the whole assembly, frame and all would come out..And what would be the advantage? Sounds like a project that would require a maximum rate of BPH (Beers Per Hour)..

Back on the boat. The stuff I used on the hatch is called "backer rod" and is 1/2" diameter. It is a foam rod used as backing when caulking a large gap. It sounds crazy, but no water comes in when I hose off (the true test, since rain comes down mostly). I am wondering if some sort of tubing might not work as well, sealed so that it holds air....

No adhesive, Albert. It just jams into the groove and stays there. I know it sounds crazy, but the stuff is cheap and if it doesn't work, I can always go with the $5/foot option. So far, so good.
