Took the canvas off the front cabin window today to watch a storm and found out my front cabin windows are leaking, the caulk or rubber seal that goes around the windows has shrunk and is pulled far away from the corners forming a triangle..The canvas is on almost all the time so I haven't seen any problem till now. Watched the water run down the corners on the inside and drip down the interior at the front berth and realized thats why the side panels have got funky over the years..With the canvas on, it doesn't leak.. Went around and looked at all the other non sliding windows and realized they are all about in the same shape and that if someone had done a little maintenance on these over the past 10 or 15 years it would have saved me a lot of work in the next few weeks.. Can I use silicon to seal around the window edges or is that a problem? I plan on doing the inside and outside of every window this weekend (Happy Independence Day) to cure this problem.. If they had been maintained and re-sealed properly it would have saved so much work, that has now accumulated from years of neglect... That kind of stuff really gets me P.O'd.
Thanks,
Sean

Sean,

I’m not a big fan of silicon chalk Shame on you especially in areas that might need painting in the future. Brick wall If it where I, I’d go to a good marine paint store explain the situation & get there recommended chalk.
Just my ½ pennies worth. Whistle

Thanks Norm. The part that I was going to caulk is the area that is in the aluminum frame that isn't painted. It almost looks like it used to be a rubber gasket that has hardened over the years or was actual window glaze.. I was even thinking that a marine store or hardware store might have some sort of caulk "rope" to use..
Thanks,
Sean

Does it look something like this stuff that seals the the glass into the frame Think If so U can probably get it at the local glass shop it's the stuff they use to seal the glass in the shower doors

No, I think at one time it was just some applied sealant.. There is no channel in the seal, as far as I can tell. Just looks like it was sealed after the window was placed in the aluminum frame. Thanks, Though!

I talked to John at Marinette today. He said that those windows are sealed with a rubber channel gasket like you have Norm. I asked if he thought it was worth pulling the windows and installing new gasket. He said if it was his boat he would just used a marine grade window sealer in a tube. Dare I ask how much of a PITA it will/would be to do this with the rubber seal? Although, I think I know the answer..Lets see, spend time having brews and digging the pretty girl by my side, or spend the day pulling windows and re installing new gasket..?

Let’s put it this way it’s no walk in the park. Especially if one of the corner screws “phillip head”
strips out or worst yet break. I had to change mine due to fogged glass. Try what John A. suggested what’s there to loss? More time for checking out the Bikini’s & having a few Brewski’s Whistle
