Dug up one of my coffee cans and bought me a NEW PC. Whooppee.

Question: Is there a way to send hard drive data from one PC to another with a cable and, if so, how is this done?

Thanks,

Jeff

Happy Birthday, Father's Day, and Christmas.
If it's not much you can e-mail yourself the info and recieve it on the new machine. More likely to just transfer the good and not any bad stuff this way. If you have pics and things to save, you might want to burn them on a DVD for safekeeping.--Ed

You need to plug both computers into a router, and share a folder on the new computer. With a little prep work, both computers will be on the same network, and you should be able to copy/move files from the old computer to the new folder. Then, sort as needed.

Call me if you need help. If you don't have a router, you'll need a crossover cable.

It can also be accomplished by setting up an "ad hoc" wireless network. Support for ad hoc networks on machines running windows xp is a bit sketchy. It's better in vista and better yet in windows 7. I'd consider this a last resort only worth trying if a router or crossover cable is unavailable.

BTW jsimanella: how do you use a crossover cable? I've heard of them but never seen one in action.

Jeff,

Is a cable mandatory or can you use a USB drive?
Or you can slave the drive with the new computer depending on the interfaces (parallel vs serial).

Crossover cable video!

Crossover cable emulates a switch/router. Basically, it reverses a couple of wires. Plug one end into each computer & you have a network :)

I used to make them all the time - Not hard, if you have the right tools & a good set of eyes. Much cheaper than buying one.

Crossover cables are also used to link 2 game consoles (PS3, XBox, Wii, etc.).

Off to check out Karl's video ;)

That's easy to do. (Right!) Looks like I'll burn DVDs and transfer data with them. And, no, I'm not going with the master/ slave, dual hard drives deal: Not messing around with dip switches and wires on a brand new PC!

Thanks all.

Jeff,

There is one other way that you may want to consider. That would be the usage of a USB (flash - thumb) drive. Plugging one of these into your old pc will create a new drive letter (E: for example). You can then transfer the files from your old pc to this drive. Then, unplug it from the old pc and plug it into the new one. I'm guessing the new PC is loaded with Windows 7 (unless that coffee can was a little short and you searched out a "deal" on an XT pc (running at 8 Mhz) with Windows 3.0 on it.... (sorry, couldn't resist... :-P ). Anyhoo, the procedure to copy the files now residing on the USB drive isn't too much different when you're copying to the new PC with Windows 7. The system will recognize the USB drive as a new drive letter and you'll just need to copy the files from the USB to where ever on the new pc you'd like.

You can get a USB drive pretty cheap. We have a good source in Ohio: Microcenter which sells several different sizes:

You can find the Microcenter brand drives here:
http://www.microcenter.c...wProduct&web_group=

I'd guess the 8Gb (capacity of 2 DVD's <compressed> would fill the bill.

I have a set of instructions I send to my users at work I'll send you. I get wordy (ya think!?) but they're pretty concise.

Good idea, and far easier than burning DVDs.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,
Maybe someone you've helped on this site many times could send you an 8G or better thumb drive. At a $20 value that wouldn't be asking too much. I would hate for you to have to get the shovel out again. Eh?
