I do not know if my boat has one. Here are three from West Marine. Will the $149.00 one work? Has anyone used any of theses?
Thanks!
Sean

You SHOULD have one. It keeps stray AC from damaging the hull.

Unless someone pulled it off the boat or if you have a very old Marinette, you will have one.
Depending on size and type of boat, look on both sides of the firewall. The isolator is usually mounted to that wall.

I know what they do, just haven't found mine yet. (72 32' Express FB) My "mystery" low CAPAC readings at the dock has been uncovered. I have found the enemy, and it is we! I always checked my reading with the shore power plugged in, but off. And as you can guess, my readings are fine till I plug the shore power in, and then it drops to .75.( was always at .9 last year). Soooo from what I have read here that seems a good place to start. Will the ones I posted earlier work? What about the one that plugs in to the shore power chord? I have a breaker box with two 30amp breakers. I think my old one is buried in the helm where the breaker box is and about ten miles of wires that are no longer used.
Thanks!

So I checked again this weekend and found no gal. isolator. The shore power comes in at the helm and goes directly to the breaker box. Maybe an inch clearance between the wires from the shore power plug to the box... Didn't have a chance to fully investigate, but as soon as I unplug the shore power all is well.. So will the $149.00 from West Marine work for this application?
Thanks!

Sean, I have a 73 express & it is located on bulkhead on starbord side in front of engine.
I have a question for all. How do we know it is working? Should the transformer hum?

I thought from looking at the schematic it should be the first thing the ground wire plugs into after the shore power plug.. Don't know if it makes a huge difference.. But I will check there, thanks Wayne.

I could find no sign of a galvanic isolator on my boat when I bought her. I was reading 0 ohms between the shorepower green ground pin and the hull with an ohmmeter. There was no damage to the hull that I could see, and the Capac was reading properly, but a screwup in the marina power could have pulled aluminum off the hull in a real hurry.

A galvanic isolator protects the hull as long as the marina ground is intact. At my marina, the ground burned up halfway down the dock, and some guy had his ground connected to his battery, which put 12 Vdc on the shore ground for several boats. A galvanic isolator does not protect against this.

I added an isolation transformer, which is a complete fix. This is a $500 solution rather than a $150 solution, but is worth looking at.

Thanks, Doug. I get isolation and galvanic transformers mixed up.

Ok .. Well, we are definitely wondering if it is a marina issue.. But I'm going to buy the isolator from West Marine and see what happens... It's $199.00.. As I stated before, we did not have any issue last year, so if I have an isolator and it died, installing the new one should take care of the problem... If it's a marina problem, I'm sure they will love hearing me ask them to check the ground connection on our docks..

One suggestion is to test the shore power from annother dock. You might want to try it at a different marina.
If the problem does not surface then you know it is a dock power problem at your slip.
