I touched on this in another thread, but I think it is worth standing on it's own. The Chrysler 318 Marine Manual states that there are thermostats in the exhaust manifolds. Anyone familiar with this? There are also appendixes to the manual that call for restrictors at certain spots in the cooling system.. Are these well known and common or something often overlooked or it was decided later that these did not work and were left off (an appendix to the appendix)?
Huzzah!

The manual states that " All fresh water cooled engines have had incorporated within the exhaust manifold (or upper portion of "S" type riser if so equipped), a thermostat to control the exhaust manifold temperature. " Then it shows the diagram. The thermostat is part # 2847431

Also regarding engine overheating or exhaust manifold overheating ( M273 & LM318 with single 1'' water inlet)
"When engine overheating is encountered, or a condition where exhaust manifold overheating fluctuates from side to side, a restrictor installed between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust elbow ( or between "S" riser and exhaust manifold where risers are are used) will stabilize the cooling system. "
It is essentially a washer .94-1.10 in diameter with a .35 hole in the center and is .30-.35 thick. These are the exact dimensions in the manual.

It continues: Restrictor is to be assembled into the machined recess around the water outlet passage in the exhaust elbow.
In emergency the flanged end cover from exhaust manifold thermostat P/N 2847431 may be used as a restrictor.
In cases where an old style exhaust elbow without the machined recess is used an additional gasket, P/N 2847432,
assembled between exhaust manifold and exhaust elbow should be used to locate the restrictor in the correct
position.."

One more.."As a field service repair for recurrent overheating on the suject models ( M273, LM318 & LM340 with fresh water cooling) a 5/16" I.D. restrictor installed in the fresh water bypass will give increased water flow thru the heat exchanger thereby increasing the systems cooling capacity.
Restrictor should be installed in the hose nipple in the intake manifold, or in the nipple on the circulating water pump rather than in the hose so that the by-pass hose may be serviced with a standard replacement part when necessary." ( hose runs between top of water pump and front base of intake manifold thermostat)
Maybe this explains the temp differences in the same engine on the exhaust manifolds..
I hope this helps somebody.. Anyone ever replace these thermostats or add the restrictors? I'm curious to see if mine (thermostats) are installed...
Cheers!

And Chrysler still has the thermostats available. Lakeland Marine can get them.. I find it interesting that these might be in the manifolds, known or unbeknownst.. What if some mechanics installed them and some didn't? Is it possible that the restictors might be in place where not needed causing more problems where once they were correcting them? I think so.
