Has anyone investigated or used CopperCoat Anti fouling paint?

they claim 10 years of coverage, and inert copper on top of a two part barrier coat.

I am so tired of Trilux. Reaching for the moon I suspect, but they claim it has worked well for 8 years for the Spanish Navy on aluminum hulls.

8 years is nothing to brag about! And the Spanish navy is not my first choice for experts. You can get by with it, kind of, with a epoxy barrier coat to keep the copper separated from the aluminum. But a thin spot or a scratch and now you have a battery, with your hull disolving. No way I would even consider using it. I have E-paint ( or E-pro ) that is made for aluminum. Quite happy with it. Or you might try the slippery bottom paint, no algeacide to kill the growth, it just can't stick to it. Or have a trailer and pull the boat out when you aren't using it. If you only have it in the water for a short time you won't get much growth. No perfect solution, you have to decide what's best for you. Good luck, Ed

I am afraid to use a bottom paint that is not intended for aluminum, but am not so impressed with trilux after my recent haulout. Despite cleanings every six weeks by a diver, the hull had a lot of large barnacles.

A commercial operator (rents pontoon boats) told me that he had better luck with Alumacoat, a Petit product, so I had the marina put on two coats. Sadly, I ran up on a sandbar on the way back to my marina and likely rubbed a lot of it off, not to mention dinging up the props. Still, I will report on the results...

Different paints work better in different waters, so you might try to ask commercial operators what luck they have had. Don't ask yacht owners, very few of us (myself included) keep really good records so our opinions are not really reliable....

I operate in the South River of the Chesapeake Bay. This is my second Marinette 32'. Trilux II basically is useless in this brackish water, after over eleven years of use on two boats. Has anyone risked trying this or similar paint in this area?

With A fresh coat of Trilux in April, I'll have an inch or more of barnacles by August. I keep my boat in the water year round, and have no trailer to pull it out, so I have to have it pulled.

I have asked them for a Marinette reference, but have yet to get one.

Hi Bud;
I used VC17. Took hull down to bare alum, etched and applied three layers of two part tar barrier coat and three coats of blue VC-17.Think This was on my old 32. I had it for ten seasons. and it was a breeze to power wash in the fall and apply a feash coat of VC-17 in the spring. You can contact Interlux and they will walk you though the procedure.Applause

A few things on this subject.

Very seasoned sailer with metal hull
Quote:
Hull maintenance

No anti fouling. Instead apply Copper coat. 14 years weed free and at the cost of 3 years anti fouling. More saving.
We polish the hull with Starbrite Teflon polish 3 coats applied with a week between each coat and it lasts about 4 years.

From Coppercoat site

Quote:
Does Coppercoat cause any problems with regards to electrolytic/galvanic action?

No. With the resin carrier insulating each copper sphere, the final coating is inert and non-conductive. A current can not pass through Coppercoat and this coating does not cause or promote electrolysis or cathodic decay. Consequently Coppercoat can be safely applied to metal structures such as iron keels and steel or aluminium craft (after the application of an appropriate epoxy primer). The property of electrical non-conduction in metallic powders including copper was first discovered in 1890 by Eduard Branley and is known as the “Branley Effect”. Sacrificial anodes should be fitted in the usual manner.

How about using West System epoxy for a bottom coat? Anyone ever tried that?

WEST system epoxy is not a paint and behaves poorly on a surface: it won't "stretch" or stick and just runs off.

I have (as recommended by WEST) put it on aluminum by wet-sanding it in, and it really sticks. but that is a lot of work.

A friend in Rivera Beach, FL, about 30 years ago tried mixing WEST with fine copper powder and sanding/painting onto his concrete hull. He figured that each year he could just sand lightly to expose new copper. He wasn't satisfied with the results, and went back to bottom paint. What he did was pretty much the same as coppercoat, and I don't know why it was not effective.

He next tried sanding WEST into the back of aluminum sheet and vacuuming it to the hull in sections. This worked OK but was a labor of love. But copper around aluminum makes me nervous.

I am going to try Propspeed on my props (they are waiting for me at the shop) and see if that works well for running gear. Maybe with coppercoat and Propspeed I could forget those annual haulouts.....

I see that these guys are just down the road from my boat, so I will run on down and have a look when I get (finally!) down there.

Bud,

I’ve often thought about Glassing the bottom & using one of the higher copper A/P like VC or VC OFFSHORE with 42% Cuprous oxide than thought what happens if it chips, peels etc. would the copper in the A/F paint start corroding AL. as we all know the smaller the chipped area the greater effect of corrosion. AnyWho that’s my ½ penny’s worth. If U do go the route please keep the forum well informed of the out come. Pray
