WEST system epoxy is not a paint and behaves poorly on a surface: it won't "stretch" or stick and just runs off.
I have (as recommended by WEST) put it on aluminum by wet-sanding it in, and it really sticks. but that is a lot of work.
A friend in Rivera Beach, FL, about 30 years ago tried mixing WEST with fine copper powder and sanding/painting onto his concrete hull. He figured that each year he could just sand lightly to expose new copper. He wasn't satisfied with the results, and went back to bottom paint. What he did was pretty much the same as coppercoat, and I don't know why it was not effective.
He next tried sanding WEST into the back of aluminum sheet and vacuuming it to the hull in sections. This worked OK but was a labor of love. But copper around aluminum makes me nervous.
I am going to try Propspeed on my props (they are waiting for me at the shop) and see if that works well for running gear. Maybe with coppercoat and Propspeed I could forget those annual haulouts.....
I see that these guys are just down the road from my boat, so I will run on down and have a look when I get (finally!) down there.
