Hello all. My name is Jay. I just joined your Marinette Owners group. I purchased a 31 ft 1963 Express Hardtop today. I am sure several of you have seen her on ebay. I will be adding pictures of the Project boat. She has a couple of flaws in the hull to have repaired but not serious issues. She doesn't have engines but I plan to install Vortec V-6 Chevy plants with ZF 1:1 transmissions. These should be very comparable to the original 185HP Buick engines she was designed for. It is 31.5 Ft with a 10ft beam, on a homade trailer. The unusual points in her construction are the left hand helms, She actually has a dual helm in the front of the cabin, which seems silly to me. She needs some TLC and basic repairs and refits to make her great again but all in all a great vessel to work with. I am looking for some guidance however from the group. I am curious if there is a good detailed deck replacement in aluminum to be reviewed which could be copied. I am also looking to replace the cabin/cockpit bulkhead with aluminum plate as a previous owner cut two large openings in it, one for a window AC through to the cockpit, and another an access panel to the engine room (very dangerous idea). I am also looking for Marinette model plate with the seahorse logo and number 31 on it. I hope to document my project work here to share ideas, tips and tricks.

I bought the boat from the Cleveland Craigslist indeed. It has many original parts and should make for a complete project. The hull is sound with only 3 or 4 areas to address due to dents or gouges. I will be replacing or repairing all through hulls as I can get to them easily with no engines etc. All new water and holding tanks, I will be moving a number of items around like the horn from the forward sun deck to the express roof, so I can have full size sunpads on the cabin salon roof. I got the rails, old lights (broken), side/aft curtains (good for patterns), all the cushions etc. I have already removed the aft bench that was built of non-marine ply. I think a good degreasing of the entire hull interior side is in order. Another great thing is the original owners manual and capac are included. I took a bunch of pictures last night when I pulled it infront of my house, today I will pull it to our cabin up north where the work will progress. It was suprisingly easy to pull with the '04 Expedition.

Jay,

On the deck pattern issue your best bet would be to carefully remove the decking & use it for the AL.
decking. Than there’s John Althouse’s site which sells a AL. cockpit deck replacement & a assorted bunch of different item for the BigM U may want to give that a try. On the bulkhead panels U should also use them as patterns as U’ll notice there are some curves & angles that need to be copied closely to avoid gaps & the use of molding etc. this also applies to all interior panels especially the panels in the Vee berth area. I like your plans of the Vortex V6 eng. should be a lot more economical & probably get as much or very little less top end speeds. Here’s a site U may want to try for the proper Prop size for the new power plants U plan on installing with a little searching on this site U’ll find a APP to fill out & they’ll do all the math work to come up with the proper Prop size that’ll be best for your BigM http://www.henrysmith.com/
AnyWho once again Welcome to the BigM site

Renovations have begun. I have started my renovation/refit work the last two weekends. I don't have the updated pictures of the process but will be taking more for the blog. I have started by removing the many items to be evaluated, repaired or replaced. I removed the large AC unit mounted through the cockpit bulkhead wall into the galley. I removed the square aluminum tube rail around the cockpit. I plan to install a stern railing similar to an Eastbay 46. I removed the propane system installed in the aft deck, including the aluminum storgae box. I plan to reuse the box but not sure the best usage as yet. it has a nice hinged lid and drian hole. I have removed the genset hatch so the bilges will get aircirculation and prepping for deck replacement. I removed the companionway door in order to remove the bulkhead paneling. I am considering replacing the panel with either aluminum plate. I would love a sliding companionway door, but may be beyond the scope of this project. I have pulled off all the old electronics, removed the fridge. I will be tinting the salon windows next weekend...first improvement project woohoo! I noticed the rudders are the mild steel type and the starboard rudder which is bent also has the tiller connector rod is broken so I will replace the rudders with stainless steel instead of fixing the mild steel units. I am not parting out any of the removed items as yet as I may have use yet for them in whole or as pieces as teh work progresses. I have a large old spotlight that I think I will rechrome and use a an interior lamp. I removed the devin to be reworked. I will post additional progress updates as we go along.
