Here is a link to the first point of damage on the hull I plan to take care of. I am looking for advice on this repair It is a deep impact but doesn't penetrate the hull, so I am thinking about a couple of ideas. The first woul dbe to knock it out with mallets and fill the residual areas with west system epoxy 10 in the tube and then fair it out. I don't ant a sag or the epoxy fill to come out.

The alternate idea was to braze material in the gash to fill in the depression and then grind it smooth. Then prime & paint.

Unless U can find the proper AL brazing stick (#5086) I’d not go the brazing route do to the possibility of creating a corrosion point due to dissimilar metals. Anxious But that’s just my ½ penny’s worth. BTW that gash doesn’t go thru the hull does it Think

Geeze, if it's not through the hull maybe you should just leave it. It's a beauty mark, a reminder of tougher times the boat went through and survived in tact.. Plus, once you paint it will be even less noticeable.

viewing the BigM is your wife as soon as I seen the look on her face it brought back nostalgic memory’s of my wife when see first viewed the project 74 BigM I restored back in the early 90s. She thinking with that same smile Geeezus what this gonna cost us Whistle than politely saying looks good but needs a little elbow grease. Anxious

I'd slap some good, marine epoxy on it and go boating!

Saw a 90 foot aluminum yacht that was in a fire. The filler (to make it straight) was over a 1/2 inch thick!

My 2 cents: Even if not all the way through, the area is weakened. A good al welder should be able to repair that easly. Then fill as needed.

dont forget about the flamable stuff they sprayed on the inside of the hulls, you must abate it before welding.

..."It is a deep impact but doesn't penetrate the hull,"

Such an impact area does NOT need to be welded, just filled. (See? I was paying attention!) The hull is not weakened by such an impact, though it will take quite a bit of epoxy faring compound to level it out.

To wit:

1. Sand the area to bare metal

2. Etch it with the Grudeon Brothers Method

3. Build up layers of epoxy fairing compound until it's level, blending into the surrounding paint.

4. Prime and spot paint.

5. Go boating!
