L. Francis Herreshoff, the yacht designer, referred to fiberglass as "frozen snot" and refused to allow any of his designs to be built with it. As it turned out, wooden boats have largely disappeared and a number of his designs are being made in snot. I asked him about aluminum once and he conceded that it was a fine material for work boats and larger yachts.
