Think Help please. My rub rail is really scratched up and I am not sure what to use to remove the scratch's and then bring back the matt finish. Has anyone done this before and how did you accomplish it? thanks

Tim,

That matt finish is a anodization finish once it’s taken off the only way I know of to get it back on is to have the rub rail re- anodized. It may be easier to replace with new rub rail. One of the members had a thread stating he had a source of getting some made up if enough members where interested. I think it was (Doug Doty) that posted that info. From what I recall I thought it was not no longer available. U may want to try the search on the site for that post. One suggestion if U attempt taking the rail off is to use one of those impact screw drivers even than U may end up with a few broken screws. Also etch each piece as to where it goes for replacement purposes, don’t use a felt tip pen as I did. To make a very long story short it can turn into a very big pain in the A$$. Brick wall About all I accomplished was getting years of accumulated dirt from behind the rub rail, which help with some of the black streaking for a couple of seasons. Good Luck your on Labor of Love project. Whistle

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Cap T, I took a 4" right angle angle grinder with a mop disc and sanded out the scratches & worked well for me. Wayne

Thanks guys, your right about the dirt accumulation. I think my slip is shallower now from everything that fell out from under the rails. Can't afford to replace right now, I was wondering if I ground the scratch's out of them if I can get them powder coated. The powder coating is pretty tuff and I understand it may scratch as well but surely i won't look any worse than what it does now?Drool

Tim,

One problem with powder coating other than what U stated is that the coating may not allow the two pieces to fit together readily. Think AnyWho that’s what the place that I was going to have mine re-anodized by said they wouldn’t guarantee that they’d fit into each other & powder coating is a much thicker ply. AnyWho my ½ penny’s worth Anxious
