To All,

I was just wondering Think When some of the member had their bottoms blasted to bare Aluminum have U ever gave it a thought to have it gel coated after properly etching it etc. What would be some of the Pro’s & Con’s be? Whistle Now I know U guys in salt & brackish water would have a problem Brick wall but us fresh water boaters may be able to get away with it Pray with some of the new clear anti fouling polishes & agents they have on the market today. AnyWho just something to toss around on this chilly drizzly day Anxious

Gel coat is polyester instead of epoxy (barrier coat). It might work, but the adhesion of epoxy is gotta be a lot better. The AF paint goes on last, so there wouldn't be much of a reason for it.

It's a LOT more flexible than aluminum! I'd be concerned with adhesion, however. If it starts falling off.....

I still wonder about going bare aluminum on the bottom. There are thousands of small aluminum fishing boats and pontoon boats here in MI that don't have bottom paint and they seem to hold up just fine. Might get a bit more slime growth than w/ af bottom paint, but nothing a scrub w/ a coarse brush a couple of times a season wouldn't get rid of quickly.

I've finally run out of my stock pile of Trilux II bottom paint and need to start doing something different next spring. Anyone know why this would be a bad idea?

I see no advantage of using gelcoat on alluminum. Poor adhesion, expensive and slime would still build up.

It is common practice on large alluminum houseboats to have bare hulls. These vessels travel at 6 to 8 mph and average approx 1 gpm. Most I have seen spend 99 percent of the time in the slip and are used as weekend party platforms rather than serious boats.

Cleaning the bottom every couple of weeks would be required to reduce the loss of speed and increased fuel consumption.

Advantage of going bare alluminum is it greatly reduces the effects of galvanic corrosion since the electrons are not focused on small bare areas such as chines, keels, rudders etc.
