Yes you can use off the shelf automobile t'stats. 140 degrees for raw water cooling.
On a M360 it is a NAPA 142, Sierra 18-3551.

According to my data file, those are the small diameter t-stats. You need the large diameter ones (or make up a stainless adapter plate, as I did).

Jeff posted above the info for a raw water cooled engine (140-degree stats), but the fresh water cooled 318's take a 160 degree stat. Marine Parts Source is one place that can give you the right part..that's where I purchased a 160 degree unit with gasket. If you can find one at an auto parts store, you'll save a few bucks - no marine hardware required for this part.

Fresh water is a cooling system like a car engine. It uses anti-freeze in the block which is cooled by an outside water heat exchanger. It is safer because the engine will not freeze - just the undrained heat exchanger or risers. It is a little more complex and expensive. Great if you run in salt water or live in a cold climate.

Raw water is like it sounds. Cooling water is pumped right out of the lake and into the engine block and through the manifolds and risers. It is a simple system. Not good for a dirty or a salt water boat and very hard on cold climate boaters who trust their winterizing to the drunks at a marina. If I sound bitter I am. When you lose an engine you lose a season.

Automotive "T"stats can be used with Fresh water (closed) cooling systems OK because of antifreeze but if you have raw water cooling they will only work for a short time with out problems. Auto "T"stats are made of steel & will rust & corrode in raw water. Marine "T" stats are made from brass, stainless, aluminum that are do not rust.
Sierra products ARE marine products & are compatable with both systems. Sierra products are available @ NAPA but you should also be available @ most reputable marine dealers & marine supply stores

I ran my 318's without the thermostats this year and it ran great only thing is you don't get a reading on the temp gauge.

Its seemed to start better this year than the previous, I averaged about a mile per gallon all summer and there were times I was running full throttle. We put about 450 miles on her this summer and the bottom looked really good when pulled out, I used the Schilling paint from Cleveland ( home of the Browns ) and it works really good on the riverBoo hoo!

Also Dave, the stats I have are from napa 142's about 15 bucks apiece up here.

Hmm. I was strongly advised on the forum this summer not to do that..something about messing up the engine when it's running cool at speed/load.

I concur. During the winter layup, I spray it with WD40 and put it in a zip lock bag. When it's time to install, it is tested with hot water first.
