OK guys, two questions reguarding trim tabs. 1. how to clean them correctly, mine have all kinds of deposits on them, paint too, without scratching the bejesus out of them and making them look nasty. and 2. The little switch at the helm that looks like a pawn in a chess game broke off, what did I do wrong? I barely touched it and it snapped off. Or is it a 35 year old "M" problem and just replace it? Thanks in advance for your help, JAM

Jack,

That chess piece is a joystick used to adjust your boats attitude, if you have Bennett tabs like I do.
Forward to the left would adjust the tabs put your bow down and roll the boat to the left. Straight forward would run both tabs out the same amount and put you bow down evenly without tipping to port or starboard. And of course the oppsite is true by pulling it back.

I have two the them little beasts here and one seperated in the middle, just fell apart. I suspect that is what happened to yours. I got mine back together and am planning on using some PVC glue when I'm sure it's working correctly.

Joe, mine broke off just below the pawn and above where it mates onto the switch itself, making repair, I believe, just pull off the bottom piece (base of toggle) and get a new one. I just couldn't believe how easy it snapped off. I was trying to find out if others had this issue, and if they did what was the best fix? Make up a new 'pawn' or joystick or just buy the replacement? I am aware of this piece's function, just amazed how eazily it broke. Maybe it was allready broken and temperarily repaired by the PO. I hated that dumb switch so much I replaced it with a couple of toggle switches. Might have one of them left in my junk pile, though.

PS: If you want to go the way I did, I have the wiring schematic.

Yeah, I really like the two flat toggles upstairs on the bridge, that might be the ticket, nothing to get hit. If you find em let me know. I'll be making a repair decision soon and might need those schematics, thanks Jeff! JAM

Jack,
Had the same thing happen to mine this spring. I removed the screw and inserted a new one with threads on both ends, just a bit longer and screwed the " pawn' to the lower section. Since the lower section seems to have some spring to it , it made up just fine. Don't know if this will help you but it worked just fine for me.

The toggles came from Radio Shack.

Here's the Bennett Trim Tabs wiring set up:

Fuse: 12-volt system use 20 amp in-line fuse on positive.

Red -----------------------------Port Valve
Green ---------------------------Starboard Valve
Blue ----------------------------Motor Forward (pump pressure)
Yellow --------------------------Ground
Orange on Helm Control ----------Positive

(Note: Use Orange + to power the above valves and motor.)

Operation: -----------------------Reaction:

Orange (+), blue, red -------------Port trim tab down
Orange (+), blue, green, ----------Starboard trim tab down
Orange (+), blue, red, green ------Both trim tabs down
Orange (+), yellow, red -----------Port trim tab up
Orange (+), yellow, green ---------Starboard trim tab up
Orange (+), yellow, red, green ----Both trim tabs up

Mark, I like that idea, will try that when I go up to the boat in 2 weeks and if that fails, I'll be using Jeffs diagram (thanks Jeff!) and rewiring. The FB has rocker swtches and they are MUCH easier to operate and require no maintainance or 'dainty' handling which could spell trouble when you least want it to! JAM

..."The FB has rocker swtches and they are MUCH easier to operate "

I agree. Nothing like bumping one, separate switch to make a fine adjustment.

Are separate switches expensive and are they hard to install?

No and....not really. I used momentary, SPDT switches from Radio Shack. I used an aluminum plate to mount them side by side in the old switches' location. Had to file out the wood behind the plate a bit, as I recall.
