Things are getting quiet at the marina and I am going to proceed with my TV project. I am looking at either a 22" or 26" flatscreen. Where have you guys mounted TV's on 32's that functioned well. I am leaning toward putting it on the stand between the gaalley and the couch. I believe with the right mount I could see the thing from the v-berth or the pilot house just by swinging and tilting.

Anybody got previous experience?

While looking for our boat we saw a couple of interesting ways of using a flat screen. None involved the size TV you're looking to use though. Best one was a nice teak <?> shelf built above the stand at the end of the settee and galley. It was a triangulated job with a lip at the front. That didn't take away from the stand's usable surface and because the curtains, when pulled back tended to create a blind spot of sorts anyhow, didn't affect visibility. That's what I'm planning to build this off season and install in the spring. It would be visible only from the salon area. PO of Sunset Seeker said he had a flat screen mounted in front berth area (port side on the bulkhead) where there's a 110v outlet. Would seem a bit cramped in a 32' but different strokes....

I installed a 23" Samsung HDTV/Monitor in my saloon opposite the settee. The TV was about $220 from NewEgg.com, an excellent source for computer and consumer electronic stuff.

I installed it using a Rosewill model RMS-MT2790 mount, from the same source, around $25. The mount is removable, with a piece that goes on the back of the TV that slides into and lifts out of the piece that mounts to the cabin side. The mount is aluminum castings, and I replaced the screws and stuff with stainless hardware to marinize it. I bought some extra mounts: I can move the TV to the dinette so that I can use it as a monitor, and I could also put a mount in the forepeak.

I installed a powered antenna also, a Rosewill RMS-HDA5000. It is small and mounts to the bimini frame. Also Newegg, $25. I like to see the live radar weather, but I don't much care about the other 25+ channels. I have a blueray player and I rent movies a lot.

For travel I take the TV down and leave it face down on a cushion. It's easy to put it back.

The 23" size is pretty good for viewing from 7 feet away, across the saloon, and I am not sure that a larger one would be worth the effort. I can only use it at the dock, since I do not have an inverter, but a true sine wave unit for the required 100 watts is cheap. If I were doing it today, I would get a model with LED backlighting since they draw less power.

Dougrose brought up a good point - that of going to an LED TV as opposed to an LCD. Not only is the LED brighter, it is lighter AND much thinner. I'm looking at doing the same thing and thought about using a fully articulated mount that could be mounted between the galley and the salon.

Bob, I think you have a good plan. But I would buy a mount much larger than what is used at home, because of the boat's motion. I beat this by taking the screen off the wall, I don't think I would trust the mount while jumping a wake or whatever.

There are some small LED HDTVs that use wall warts and actually run on 12V. They can plug right into the boat, but need to be protected from alternator spikes and overvoltage when the engines are running. I have built a circuit for this to use with my eeePC, and I will post the design shortly. I think that it is best to run stuff from 12V if you can.
