I just did a search for information on marine TV antennas. Been looking at the Shakespeare SeaWatch and the Glomex. Any opinions and or suggestions?

I've had both Shakespeares, and now I have the Glomex w/ preamp. Much better, IMHO.

Last trip to the boat I installed a small powered antenna from NewEgg. It mounts, with a little playing around, on the bimini frame over the flybridge. It cost $25, and picks up dozens of stations from Orlando, 60 miles away over flat ground. I am pleased with it. I didn't use the hardware that came with it, I scrounged around my leftover bucket for stainless stuff. I don't know how good "outdoor" is in the marine environment, but if it lasts a season or two.....

Thanks for taking time to help a guy out. All good information and suggestions! I will take all into consideration. It seams that the Glomex is a little moor expensive but it seems to have good feed-back. I have purchased computer parts from NewEgg with good luck. How is the amplifier powered, is it inline on the cable near the TV? Any suggestions as to the best way to run the cables?

I've used an Allstate for 5 years plus with good results. It has a preamp to draw in distant signals. It works even better with digital TV, which was a pleasant surprise.

Here's what it looks like.

Jeff

PS: I tell the slip suckers that it's a "radar unit".

There is no doubt in my mind that the Glomex unit is superior. But it is ten times the cost of the cheap unit that brings in all the stations in Central Florida. Apparently it lacks an FM-blocking filter, since it seems to get all the FM stations too. I prefer watching movies on disk, but the TV is good for weather and news.

The Rosewill unit uses an in-line power injector that runs on a 9 volt wall wart. I am OK with the ac requirement because the TV needs ac anyway. When I get the TV on 12V then I will power the injector from 12v too.

Incidentally, many of the new LED HDTVs in the 20" to 30" range run on 12V, and can be powered directly from the boat. The problem is, they want 12V, not 14.6V with alternator spikes and system noise. I have built a box for my computer that regulates the battery voltage to an even 12V for these sensitive loads. If anyone is interested, I will do a howto on it.

Thanks Doug. I never considered the 12v power problems you mentioned.
